Activity description

Amstiffs are very big dogs and also a dog that requires a lot of exercise to work those big muscles. You are probably well aware by now that your Amstiff does not behave well when they miss their morning walk or afternoon play session in the yard! They can get bored pretty easily and then misbehave- that’s not good for you or your Amstiff! However, what can you do if it is raining and your Amstiff refuses to go outside? Or what if it is very hot and you know this breed does not fare well in the heat? How can you give your Amstiff the proper daily exercise then? Here’s how!

Step
1
Stairwell fetch
Play a game of stairwell fetch with your Amstiff by beginning at the top of the stairs with a ball and some treats. Throw the ball down the stairwell and have your big pup chase after it, lumbering down the stairs and back up as they bring you the ball again. Give them a quick reward and throw the ball again! Perfect stair workout for your pup.
Step
2
Couch tug
If you’re just hanging out on the couch and your dog is dying to play, simply grab a rope or other tug toy and let them pull. Not only do you not even have to move but your Amstiff is certainly getting the exercise they need! Be warned, you may have to move from your seat as this big pup is strong - they may pull you right off!
Step
3
Mini chase
Play a game of mini chase with your Amstiff by running around your house, antagonizing them in a playful way to follow you. Your Amstiff will get all worked up and see this as a very fun game. You don’t need a lot of space to get them moving!

Activity description

Not only is this next activity fun for you and your pup but it is also extremely necessary for your Amstiff to be a well adjusted dog. American Staffordshire Terriers and Mastiffs were both used as fighting dogs in the past which would bring out their tendency to be dominant and aggressive. While these dogs are gentle giants by nature, they do have that switch that can flip when they feel threatened or are being protective of their owners. In order to combat this behavior, your Amstiff needs to be socialized from a young age. When trained well, you will never see this aggression and have a happy, loving pup!

Step
1
Dog friends
When your Amstiff is young or whenever you first adopt them, introduce them to other dogs as soon as you can. When meeting a new dog, have them meet on the leash for the first time and just walk side by side. Next, let them play with the leashes still attached and then finally with the leashes off. Gradual introductions are necessary to keep both pups in control and happy.
Step
2
Human friends
Introduce your Amstiff to humans in the same manner. Begin with the leash on and you in control of your dog. Have the new person put their hands out, palms upward to let your Amstiff sniff them. If the new person happens to toss your Amstiff a treat, that won’t hurt either! Seeing a new person as a source of yummy food is a great association.
Step
3
Playdates
Schedule times for your Amstiff to play with dog friends frequently. Also, never isolate your dog from your human friends but, instead, fully incorporate your dog into your life. When you are relaxed around other people and new dogs, your Amstiff will also be relaxed. A dog with friends is a happy dog!

New Toys
Activity description

An Amstiff can be a very playful breed that loves tossing around toys. That being said, you probably are well aware of your Amstiff’s ability to easily destroy toys. Those big paws and that powerful jaw can easily go through toy after toy, playing with each for only a matter only a matter of minutes before the stuffing is out, the plastic is chewed and the squeaker is gone! Finding the right toy that you Amstiff loves and will last more than a day can be a challenge, so instead of seeing it as a frustration, why not make it into a game?

Step
1
Research
Research toys that are perfect for your Amstiff. Toys that claim to be indestructible are a good place to start. Toys that are made of thick rubber, woven nylon or are not full of stuffing are all good options for a toy destroying Amstiff! Also, consider what your dog likes to do with their toys. Tug, chew or just toss around - which would your Amstiff prefer?
Step
2
Buy and try
Buy a few indestructible toys for your dog and lay them all out in front of them to evaluate. See what your pup naturally gravitates toward. Does your Amstiff seem interested in the new Kong toy or do they go right for a plush squeaky squirrel? Watch as they sniff the toys and instantly pick their favorite.
Step
3
Play
Play with your Amstiff and their new toy and see how long it lasts. If the toy truly holds up when faced with this big breed's tough style of love, immediately go buy more! When your Amstiff finds a toy that they like and one that is also not trash after a few minutes, it is worth investing in a few extras!

More Fun Ideas...

Quick Walks

While Amstiffs do love exercise, this breed is not always suited for long walks or runs as their large bodies can be tough on their joints. Bring your Amstiff for multiple quick walks every day to keep them moving but also give their body a rest in between walking.

Hurdles

While Amstiffs are a very big breed, a few agility games can be good to get them moving. Hurdles are perfect as they let your Amstiff jump and get out some energy while not being too difficult for this big pup to navigate.

Conclusion

Amstiffs are certainly a fun breed to have. This big playful pup can be a handful but when they are kept busy and trained well, they are sure to be a great member of your family. When deciding what to play with your dog, always keep in mind their size, energy level and ability to get along with others. If you think about what your pup needs and wants to do, then any activity will be sure to be a hit!
