Activity description

Australian Cattle Dogs were bred to be herding dogs, helping ranchers move cattle from one field to another. These dogs would run alongside cows, listening to commands to chase the cows left and right until they finally arrived at their destination. This deep need to herd is definitely present in Boston Cattle Dogs as well. However,  you do not need to find a field of cattle to help satisfy your dog's need to herd. Instead, teach your dog how to play treibball - an awesome game for dogs who love to herd but are lacking in farm animals to chase!

Step
1
Find a field
Find a field or large flat area where you can set up your treibball court with your dog. A fenced in area is best so that you do not have to worry about your Boston Cattle Dog running away. A soccer field or a track are two locations that would be ideal and likely to be nearby.
Step
2
Set up
Set up a goal at one end of the field. A soccer goal is preferable so, if you are already on a soccer field, then you are all set! Evenly distribute eight large exercise balls across the field. These are what your pup will be "herding" into the goal. Official treibball rules say to set the balls up in a triangle formation so give this a try or simply put them across the field as you please.
Step
3
Get the goal
Teach your dog to follow commands like "left" and "right" to push and guide the balls toward the goal. Have your pup direct one ball at a time, giving commands and showing them how to handle the ball. Once your pup has pushed the ball into the goal, give them lots of praise and rewards! Continue playing until your dog has gotten all of the balls into the goal. Your Boston Cattle Dog has successfully herded! Now, practice every day so that they get faster at their herding job.

Activity description

Many people associate Boston Terriers with having a lot of energy. While this is true, a Boston Terrier's energy is very manageable and they will be sweet loving pups when they are properly exercised. Those Boston Terriers that are constantly barking and running in circles around a house are probably not getting enough exercise in their daily routine. Boston Cattle Dogs are the same- they also need regular exercise to stay on their best behavior. One way to do this is by giving your dog the chance to not only run, but to jump! Indoors and outdoors, there are plenty of ways to help your dog leap and jump their way to good behavior.

Step
1
Obstacle course
Set up an obstacle course outside in your yard or at a local park or dog park. You don't need much (although there are many dog obstacles that you can purchase for your course), just something for your pup to jump up on like a box or bench, possibly something to crawl under (a bench or bush can work) and something to run around (just about anything!). Train your pup to run through the obstacle course and see how fast they can go!
Step
2
Indoor hurdles
If you can't go outside due to weather, this is no excuse to not give your Boston Cattle Dog exercise! Set up a few indoor hurdles using stacks of towels. Your dog can leap and jump over the towels safely (if they fall, there's a cushy towel to break the fall) and get in a good workout inside!
Step
3
Competitions
If your dog seriously enjoys jumping, why not enter them into an official dog hurdle jumping competition?! Train your dog to go over hurdles faster and higher and then head to a dog jumping contest. Maybe your Boston Cattle Dog will win first place or maybe not but they will definitely have fun!

Activity description

A Boston Terrier and an Australian Cattle Dog are both very high energy dogs. One was bred to run around fields herding animals and the other is widely known to be extremely lively. So, naturally, a Boston Cattle Dog also has a lot of energy. You have already seen how to play treibball and how to conquer hurdles with your pup but what about day to day energy releasers? You definitely need to find ways to let your dog use that vigor on a daily basis with minimal effort from you. These quick, fun games will have your pup happily running around and getting out any excess energy they may have built up.

Step
1
Dog park
Dog parks are the perfect place to bring your Boston Cattle Dog to run and play. Not only can you just sit back and watch as your pup runs freely, but you can also be glad that your dog is getting some social interaction while playing, a second perfect reason to visit the dog park!
Step
2
Water play
Take a trip to the water and bring your Boston Cattle Dog. Whether it be a simple stream or a big beach ocean, your dog is going to love running and splashing in the water. Bring a ball so you can play water fetch and watch your pup swim out after their toy. Swimming is a whole new form of exercise for your Boston Cattle Dog and one that will make them happy but also tire them out!
Step
3
Smart toys
Boston Cattle Dogs are smart pets so you need to engage their mind as well as their body. Buy toys for your pup that are challenging and will let their brain get a little exercise. Treat dispensing toys are ideal as are dog treat puzzles. Look for one that is really complex as your pup's kind is known to be intelligent!

Tricks

Once your Boston Cattle Dog has learned all the basic tricks, don't stop your training there! Teach your dog new, fun tricks and work on training every day to ensure they know who is the boss (this breed likes to try to be dominant so don't let them!).

Walk...A Lot

With a Boston Cattle Dog be prepared to walk, walk and walk some more! This canine loves a nice long walk so grab the leash and go!

Conclusion

As the proud owner of a Boston Cattle Dog, you know how important exercise is for your dog so hopefully, these awesome new activities will help your dog get the workout they need. You will also have a great time doing all of these fun things alongside your pup. Grab your bathing suit and head to the water with your dog to swim, arrange for a quick game of treibball and help your dog learn to jump and leap through the air. If you do all the activities on this list, both you and your pup will sleep well, cuddled up just as this dog loves to do!Â
