Introduction

In Alabama, we have rainy weather all of the time. This humid, tropical weather, well, it doesn’t get here by accident. We experience winter rain while everyone else gets snow, spring torrents, summer thunderstorms, and autumn hurricanes that swing up from the Gulf of Mexico. So no matter the season, rainy weather finds a way into Alabamians’ and their dogs’ lives. How do you entertain your pup on a rainy day or during a week-long dousing scenario in ‘Bama? Keep reading for some ideas!

Activity description
Those rainy days often get us down, pups included. But don’t fret too long. After you and your furry pal watch the rain pour and the trees blow for a bit, have some fun in the house. Turn on some lamps and even overhead lights to brighten the space, and get into the playful spirit. Room to Room will have you and your dog moving all over the house, so it’s perfect for getting a lazy, rainy day doggie up and active. They’ll love all the attention and certainly the treat rewards! Surely, this will become your rainy day go-to activity.
Step
1
Prep the treats with partner
You’ll need a lot of rewards for this game to work. So, we recommend cutting the treats into smaller pieces. You may halve or quarter the bits to make sure your stash is plentiful. After you establish how the game is working, you might even reward your dog with toys instead.
Step
2
Room #1
Begin in any room of the house. You and your other human partner should remain on either side of this room. Have your partner call to your dog, and when they come, reward the pup with a treat. You should then call back to them, and when they come back to you, reward them with a treat. The rules are established. Do this once more.
Step
3
All over the house
After that back-and-forth routine has gone well in room #1, have your partner move to the next room over. They’ll call, the dog will go, and your partner will give them a treat. When you call again, your dog will come back to you, and you will reward them with a treat. Both partners may begin to move all over the house. The dog will follow your voice and your partner’s voice to receive treats and possibly even toys.

Small chair/stool

Activity description
This is almost like teaching your pup some new tricks, and what better time to do so than on a rainy day? Maybe it’s a Saturday morning, and your doggo has been waiting all week to go out into the yard or park and play with you. Don’t let them grow too disappointed. Surprise them with some love and attention. And surprise them with this active game of Over, Around, Right On Through. Our hope is that your pooch will enjoy the variety of movements and feel tuckered out (in the best of ways) pretty soon. Get ready! Here we go!
Step
1
Find materials
You’ll need a small chair, a small stool, or some piece of furniture that your pup can go “over, around, and right on through.” You can look around your home. Check the kids’ playroom for appropriately sized furniture. You might use a wagon (if it isn’t outside, completely filled with rainwater) or an adjustable TV dinner stand. You may even have a little set of doggie stairs. Many things could work; you’ll just have to find what does.
Step
2
Treats speak
When there are treats to be won, your dog is probably listening. They want to know what they have to do so that they can have the delicious morsel. Guide your dog over, around, and right on through the object with the treats. They’ll get quite a little workout as they leap, walk around, and even crawl.
Step
3
All-in-one obstacle
It really is an all-in-one sort of obstacle course. You can add to it, but these three movements are plenty to keep your pup entertained for a bit. Test their other abilities as well. Have them sit, shake, or lay between going over, around, and right on through the object you’ve selected.

Activity description
Remember when you were a playful youngster? You longed to put on some rain gear and go splash in all the driveway puddles. There was water everywhere: in the yard, down the slide, and near the shrubs. Some dogs love a rainy day because they enjoy walking through the soggy terrain, splashing and even cooling off if it’s warm. If this will be your pup’s first time playing Puddle Mania, then you might need to help them learn the ropes. So, strap on your own rain gear and get ready to return to your childhood days! It’ll be fun; trust us!
Step
1
Check the weather
First, you’ll need to tune into the weather forecast to know when you might have an open window. Light drizzles in the spring or summer are fine, but if there’s a thunderstorm (or worse) approaching, we want you to be safe. Puddles are wonderful, but if lightning or hail is on the way, puddles can certainly wait.
Step
2
Guide your dog
When you initially walk out into the gray day, your dog may need help (or a little reminding) with what to do. Show them yourself. As you approach a healthy puddle, kick up a little speed and jump right on in. Your doggo may look at you like you’re nuts at first, but they’ll catch on quickly. You could even take some of their toys outside. Play fetch to encourage running and splashing! Monitor them closely: they should not be drinking from the puddles.
Step
3
Freedom for all
This is a great game to bring kids into as well. They’ll enjoy splashing around in the puddles with their rain boots, too. If you have the space and a gated area, unleash your pooch and let them run free through all the drenched grass, dirt, and pathways. Be prepared: everyone will need a bath after this activity. But it’ll be a memory no one will forget!

A Few New Tricks

It might be the perfect time to learn some new tricks. If you’ve been meaning to teach your little furball some handy tricks, the rainy weather might prove to be the ideal time. You don’t have to feel guilty about not being outdoors enjoying the lovely sunshine and breeze.

Puppy Playdate

Phone or text a friend of yours who also has a dog. Making a new friend or even playing with an old one can be great for your pups. They can wrestle, play tug, or sniff each other.

Conclusion

Rainy days are often synonymous with being sad. We feel “blue” or “down,” and our pets can feel this way as well. Do all that you can to lift their spirits. They deserve it; after all, they lift us up so much. The next time the weather forecast looks like a bunch of doom and gloom, don’t let the natural elements ruin your bonding time. Bond with your dog no matter what. It’s their favorite part of life!
