Activity description

Lima, a city in Peru, is the third largest city in South America. The city is located on the Pacific coast and offers numerous beachfront areas where you and your canine companion can enjoy a walk together. Choose a beach and take your pup for a stroll. You and your pup can enjoy the ocean breeze as well as the feel of sand beneath your feet (and paws). Choose a beach on which to walk and another to watch the sunset from. It is easy enough to take a break from walking with your dog in Lima; plenty of cafes and restaurants welcome canine customers!

Step
1
Beach search
If a walk on the beach of Lima sounds like a great way to spend time with your pup, you will first want to decide which beach you would like to explore. The city lies along the Pacific Coast, meaning you have plenty of options. You can choose the Miraflores district and its nearby Virgen Milagrosa Church or check out Barranco, a district that is laid back and offers many restaurants and cafes where your pup will be welcome. Choose the location that best meets what you (and your pup) are looking for.
Step
2
Prep for fun
If you are planning to enjoy a long walk on the beach (or two) with your best pal, be sure to have a few items along with you. A leash will be necessary, both for time at the beach as well as any stops for something to eat or drink. Waste bags are also necessary so you can clean up after your pooch. Of course, treats are always good to have along, whether as rewards or to distract your pup.
Step
3
Sun fun
Once you have chosen a place to walk and have the gear that you will need, you and your pup are ready for some exercise and a little fun in the sun. Head to the beach you have chosen and walk for as long as you would like, remembering to keep hydrated. Make sure to check the beach rules regarding whether your pup is required to be on a leash or not. Be aware of any mess that your pup makes so that you can clean it up. Respect other beachgoers and most importantly, have fun with your pup!

Interested in seeing some ruins? A great place to explore is Aquas Calientes, a tourist village down the Machu Picchu mountain. Hidroelectrica is the location of the starting point for a beautiful hike through tropical landscape to Aguas Calientes, a tourist village in Machu Picchu. The trail is a flat path that follows train rails, meaning there is no chance of getting lost. On average it takes about two hours to reach Aguas Calientes and the walk is filled with breathtaking sites.  Dogs cannot join you as you visit the archaeological site, but there will be plenty of opportunity for you to spend time together on your way there and back!

Step
1
Travel method
There are several options to get to Machu Picchu; you can take the train, which is the fastest and most comfortable choice, or take a long bus or van ride through the Sacred Valley. When choosing the best route for you and your pup, keep in mind that your dog will only be able to travel in the cargo wagon of the train in their cage. A little online research will help you to get an idea of each option and which is best for you and your dog.
Step
2
Arrangements
In addition to how to get to Aguas Calientes and ultimately Machu Picchu, you will want to decide how long you would like to visit for and whether you would like to spend a night or two in the area. Since you cannot bring your pup to the archaeological site, if visiting the site is a part of your plan, you will want to make arrangements with your hotel to keep your pup while you explore.
Step
3
Pup time
There will be plenty of opportunities for long walks with your pup around Aguas Calientes and if you are embarking on the flat trail from Hidroelectrica to the area, you and your pup are in for a visual treat. While you will have to go on to Machu Picchu without your pup, it is a site to see as one of the Seven New Wonders of the World, a UNESCO World Heritage site and the only surviving intact Inca city in Peru.

More Fun Ideas...

Enjoy Water Play

If your dog seems open to water, encourage them to enjoy some water play. This can be done by filling up a kiddie pool and giving them the opportunity to splash around in it. You can even play a game of fetch where they have to go into the water to retrieve a toy. Your pup can also enjoy some water play by visiting a natural water source in the country, like a river or the ocean. Regardless of what water your pup is exploring, make sure to give them time to get used to the idea and get their feet wet. Some pups will jump right in while others will take it slow, needing some time to get comfortable.

Set Up Agility Activities

A fun way to spend time with your pooch in Peru is to set up and work with them on agility activities. This will be a great opportunity for your pup to get some exercise as well as for you to spend time with one another. Once you decide on which activities you would like to work on, you can collect the items that you will need to set them up. Make sure to start simple so that neither you nor your dog gets frustrated. You can then increase the challenge of the activity as you go. Reward your pup for their efforts with some yummy treats!

Explore Cusco

A fun place to spend time in Peru with your pup is Cusco, the historical capital of the Incas empire. Located in the Andes mountains, Cusco is about 11,200 miles above sea level. Cusco is home to Plaza de Armas, a famous colonial style main square and a fun place to explore with your canine buddy. A climb up to Plaza San Cristobal provides gorgeous views of the city. While visiting Cusco, you and your pup may encounter street dogs and llamas. A visit to Cusco will provide both of you with exercise as well as a chance to view magnificent scenery!

Conclusion

If you are debating how to spend time in Peru with your exploration companion, you will find that there are many suitable options for you to consider. There are a wide variety of adventures that you and your pup can embark upon in the country or you can engage in more simple activities. When choosing what to do, keep the energy and ability level of your pup in mind so that you can be sure that your pooch will enjoy the activity that you engage in. Most important is that you and your dog have the opportunity to spend quality time together, no matter how you choose to spend it!
