Activity description
There are many waterfalls and hiking trails that lead up to these marvels of beauty. West Virginia is sprinkled throughout the state with small to large falls, and hiking up to them can be a real adventure for you and your dog. Hiking can be quite the physical activity, and some trails are more challenging than others. Be sure to research the trails before you decide which ones you and your pup can handle. Hiking can be a wonderful bonding experience for you and your companion, and taking a few friends and their dogs can be more entertaining for all of you! Be sure not to get in the water if it is deep, especially if signs are posted. Some waters where there are falls have strong undercurrents. Safety first, always!
Step
1
Research hiking trails
To find a waterfall at the end of your journey, do some research. More than likely if you have lived in the area, you will already know where some cool waterfalls are. You may have to drive for a while with your dog to find the perfect place, but you will! You can ask a friend or look online, too!
Step
2
Prepare in advance
Going on a hike is great, and even better if you are prepared. Pack a backpack with several items, such as treats, a water bowl, a few bottles of water, a first-aid kit, and whatever else you may need. If the hike is long, be sure to take plenty of water breaks. Preparation is essential before any hike!
Step
3
Go for it!
Hiking with your dog will be a fantastic bonding experience. Your dog will be getting the physical exercise needed and you will, too! Be observant of your surroundings when walking and look out for little creatures, as well! Don't forget to stop and take a look around at the marvels of West Virginia; it is a lovely state! Enjoy your hike and the waterfall!

Activity description
The state of West Virginia is full of natural beauty, and this includes the shallow water streams. With the shallow areas and the slow current rolling over the rocks, you can't get much better of a cool down on a hot day!  Luckily, the state is filled with many waterways, and shallow areas are great for wading, jumping, retrieving, and just relaxing! Be sure you are in a safe area of the shallow river or stream with your dog. Take a careful look at your surroundings, and look for floating mats in the river that are grey, brown, or black. Also, look at the side for any algae. Another thing you can do is ask people who go to that part of the river or stream. If you have any questions about water safety in a local shallow river or stream, always ask your veterinarian.
Step
1
Find a safe spot
You may choose to ask around about safe places in the water that are shallow and not too rocky. Or, you may even live close to a relaxing stream. It is always nice to park and walk down a winding road with your pup and find a good embankment that is not too steep to enter.
Step
2
Bring along toys
Once you find a right place to get in, throw a couple of toys that float. If your dog is used to the water, going after the toys will not be a challenge at all! If this is your furry friend's first time, it will take some getting used to, and you will know right away if the interest and curiosity are there.
Step
3
Relax
Some dog owners take a low-lying beach chair to sit in the water and watch their pup explore. Getting up from time to time and participating in the frolicking is fun, too! The choice is yours, and you can see how far your imagination takes you! Just relax and have a blast together!

Hot Dog Pieces or Other Treats
Baby Pool
Activity description
This is such a fun activity that can be done in your own backyard on a super-hot day! All you need are some delicious hot-dog bits (or other scrumptious treats), a baby pool, and you and your dog! Bobbing for hot-dogs is much like the classic bobbing for apple game, typically played on Halloween by humans. Bobbing for hot-dogs may be a little less complicated because they are easier to get them in the dog's mouth! Of course, you can do bobbing for hot-dogs on any hot summer day in West Virginia, and your dog will most definitely get cooled off, especially if they are actually in the pool while bobbing!
Step
1
Choose your treats
Although the activity is Bobbing for Hot Dogs, only give your dog a few pieces. Hot dogs do contain additives, but many owners give their pooches pieces for the occasional treat. If you would rather not use hot dogs, try cooked pieces of chicken or beef. Store-bought treats will become soggy in the water, so your dog may not be as responsive to eating those.
Step
2
Get the pool ready
Purchase a baby pool and find a flat spot in your yard for it. Fill it up with cool (not too cold) water. Do not fill it up too deep, of course. Have your dog stand by the pool while filling, and he may want to go ahead and get in the water and cool off!
Step
3
Toss in the treats
It is always fun seeing the dog's reaction. First, give your dog a bite. Then toss the next one in the pool. Some dogs will dive right in and others may be hesitant. Don't force your dog to get it, just keep trying and see what happens. If it doesn't work for your pup, just get in the pool and see if your companion will join for water play!

There are many hot days in West Virginia. If your dog is one to get overheated easily, be sure to make your time outside short. If not, provide water and shade and the both of you will be just fine! There are many dogs who love the water and who love the outdoors, and luckily West Virginia has lots of places to go and explore!
