Introduction

The Kashon is a hybrid breed that mixes the Cairn Terrier with the Bichon Frise. Despite their small size, both the Bichon Frise and Cairn Terrier require active daily exercise. As a result, the Kashon does too, and you can easily meet these needs with romps in the yard and games or activities that stimulate your Kashon's body and mind.

The Kashon inherits their happy-go-lucky personality from their Bichon Frise parent. The Bichon is bouncy, affectionate and sensitive. These pups like the company of others and they tend to bark when left alone. The Cairn is also good with children, but they can be a bit rough. The Cairn Terrier can also be stubborn, but they're adventurous. The Kashon is intelligent and inquisitive, though they need daily mental and physical stimulation to prevent unwanted behaviors such as barking.

Flirt Pole
Activity description

Playing with a flirt pole is a quick and easy way to get your Kashon moving. You can either head to the pet store together to purchase a pole, or make one using some PVC pipe, a length of rope, and one of your pup's favorite toys.

To play with a flirt pole, select a large open area to maximize your pup's experience. An open space will allow you to incorporate running into the activity, as well as some jumping. You can play inside or out, depending on the weather. Flirt poles are convenient because you can use them to get your pup thinking and moving, and it's cheap and easy to play with!

Step
1
Introducing the flirt pole
If your pup came along for the pet store adventure, they've already seen the pole. When you get home, take the toy out right away and hold it outwards for your pup to sniff and explore with their nose and eyes. After you've successfully gained their attention, get started with your games.
Step
2
Playing with the pole
The simplest way to play with the pole is by standing in front of your pup and moving it back and forth for them to chase. This is entertaining, but to maximize your Kashon's physical workout, incorporate running by holding out the pole while you zigzag through the open area. Lower and raise the pole while moving to encourage jumping! Play with the pole for at least 15 minutes so your Kashon's heart rate increases!

Activity description

Let your Kashon explore the great outdoors by taking weekly hikes together. Search for hiking trails near you, if you're not aware of any in the area already. Look for trails that meet your experience level. If you're a novice hiker, you don't want to start with something too "ruff" for you and your Kashon.

Even if you tackle an easy trail, you and your Kashon are bound to see a variety of plants and animals that you wouldn't see walking through an urban neighborhood. Activate your Kashon's mind with new stimuli each week by exploring different trails. As both of your stamina improves, try taking on more challenging terrain together!

Step
1
Packing for the hike
To prepare for your hike and to make the most of your day, grab a backpack so you can take along supplies. Drinking water, a bowl for your pup, bug spray, waste bags, and a leash are all recommended. You also want to make sure you have the right attire. If you don't already have hiking boots, it's a good idea to pick them up. Activewear will make the hike more comfortable.
Step
2
Getting to know the area
When you set out on your hike, it's a good idea to bring along a map or GPS to help you navigate, especially if you've never visited the trail before. Almost all official trails are marked, and sometimes even have posted maps along the way for hikers' convenience. It's also a good idea to research any animal threats or dangerous plants you may come across throughout your hike.
Step
3
Exploring the trails
After getting an idea of where you're going and packing for your adventure, set out to explore the trail with your pooch. Keep your Kashon on a leash when hiking, in case you come across any wildlife that provokes them to run -- Kashons do enjoy chasing other animals. Tidy up your pooch's waste and take water breaks to rest. If you bring along the right supplies, you can hike for over an hour with your energetic pup.

Activity description

Obedience training is "pawfect" for Kashons as they're extremely intelligent and eager to please. Working their minds is also one way to tire them out and prevent destructive behavior.

You can do your own obedience training lessons at home with your Kashon. Start the training right away, and be sure you understand how to be an efficient leader for your Kashon before getting started. Once you're confident in your leadership skills, train your Kashon daily using sessions ranging from 15 to 45 minutes, depending on if you're introducing a command or refreshing prior learning. Have plenty of treats on hand and a leash, as it can be used to introduce commands.

Step
1
Learning to be a leader
To be an effective leader, there are some steps you need to take beforehand. This includes ensuring you're always confident when in the presence of your pup. Yelling at your dog will lead to them disrespecting you. You must correct them in a calm and quick manner when necessary, without getting angry.
Step
2
Choosing your technique
Once you're ready to start training, begin by choosing how you will introduce each command to your Kashon. You must teach them what each command word means, by getting them into the correct position. You can either lead them into the position using a treat or by strategically pulling lightly on their leash so they correspond. Also, consider using hand gestures and verbal commands in combination.
Step
3
Introducing a command
After you pick your technique, begin training. Start by introducing each command one at a time in different training sessions. Sessions should range between 15 and 45 minutes. Once learned, practice before ending the session. Start off any new training session by first revisiting the previous commands learned. This can either be done separately or in combination with a new command.

Puzzle Toy

While visiting the pet store to grab a flirt pole, check out the wide variety of puzzle toys available, "pawfect" for distracting your Kashon during those long days when you're at work! Puzzle toys work wonders at keeping dogs busy so that they don't have time to get into mischief!

Conclusion

Kashons are energetic, playful and intelligent pups that need daily exercise both for their body and mind. You can meet this need by introducing your Kashon to a variety of activities and incorporating them regularly into their exercise schedule.

For starters, be sure to include daily walks, jogs or hikes for your Kashon. If you couple the walk or jog with another activity, the length can be shorter. You can easily couple your walk, jog or hike with daily obedience lessons. Both puzzle toys and flirt poles are great for busying your Kashon's mind, and the convenience of puzzle toys is they can be used when you're not around. Set aside the time and energy to devote to your Kashon each day and they'll be a happy, healthy dog!
