While it is a great idea to give most dogs daily exercise, Saint Danes are prone to obesity which means you will need to exercise your pup even more frequently than any other breed. You don't want all those treats causing your pup problems! In fact, many people overlook potential weight issues with Saint Danes and just assume that they are just big dogs, not overweight. To keep your pooch from becoming obese, plan outdoor adventures as frequently as possible. These trips will be great for your pup's health and they will just love getting some outside quality time with you!

Step
1
Hiking fun
Find a local hiking trail that will be a bit of a challenge for you and your pup. You don't necessarily need to scale a mountain to get in a good hike. Distance, elevation and terrain can all push your limits! Plan a hike that you and your Saint Dane will be able to complete while also raising your heart rate.
Step
2
Running
If walking or hiking isn't enough of a challenge for you and your Saint Dane, try to go for a run. Running is a great way to get your pup some exercise but, with this breed, bear in mind that they are prone to joint issues and overheating in the summer - being that big does have a price to pay!
Step
3
Group walks
Find a dog group in your area that gets together for walks. Not only is this great exercise for you and your Saint Dane but it is also a perfect way to meet other dog owners and your pup can meet other dogs as well. Exercise, socializing and some nice outdoor time- what could be better!

Activity description

Saint Danes are very docile and friendly dogs. They love being around other pups and are great socializers. However, you definitely need to socialize your Saint Dane early in their life, preferably when they are still small. Once a Saint Dane grows to be full size, they can be hard to control as they are quite large, heavy and strong. If a Saint Dane has not been socialized and develops aggressive tendencies toward other dogs and people, fixing this habit could pose a serious problem. Avoid this by doing a few of these activities to get your dog used to being around others. They will be the life of the party too as everyone loves a big friendly pup!

Step
1
Dog parks
Start bringing your Saint Dane to dog parks at a young age. They will love running and exploring the park while also playing with other dogs. Being able to run free, off the leash in a safe fenced in area is priceless when it comes to socializing your Saint Dane.
Step
2
Playdates
Organize playdates for your Saint Dane with your friends and family who also have dogs. It is a good idea to have your dogs play on neutral territory the first few times they meet so that neither pup feels threatened or possessive of their space. Head to a park or just take a walk with the dogs around the block.
Step
3
People play
Don't forget to socialize your Saint Dane with people as well. Have friends over often and encourage your dog to have "good manners" by sitting at the door (not jumping on people), laying in a designated spot when you command them without being distracted by someone in their house and, of course, letting people pat them. Practicing all of these will help your dog be a well adjusted adult pup!

Activity description

Saint Bernard's were bred to be tracking dogs, helping search for lost hikers in the Alps. They have a terrific sense of smell and are excellent tracking dogs. Great Danes also love to sniff and track which means that Saint Danes have tracking in their blood from both sides of their heritage. Catering to this natural instinct will make for a fantastic way to spend the day playing with your pup. You can set up a few different tracking and searching games for your Saint Dane and make them as hard or easy as you like - give that dog a challenge!

Step
1
Find the food
Play find the food with your Saint Dane as an introductory tracking game that they are sure to excel at. Have your dog sit, show them a tasty treat and then hide it. Your dog will have to sniff all over searching for their reward. Adjust where you hide the treat to make the game harder or easier.
Step
2
Find the animal
Once your dog has mastered finding food, have them track the scent of a new animal. Have a friend with a dog, cat or other pet rub a towel on their animal. Take the towel and hide it in your house. Your Saint Dane will instantly smell a new animal scent in the house and search for the towel. Tracking instincts are amazing!
Step
3
Find you!
Now that your Saint Dane can track food and animals, why not people? Hide and seek is a super fun game you can play with your dog anytime. Have your dog sit and stay in one room while you go and hide in another. Call your dog and wait quietly as they search for you!

Dog Spa

Saint Danes are known to shed and also to drool. A good spa day will help keep your pup's fur shiny, and clean away any leftover drool from their last good shake!

Treat in a Box

Place a treat or piece of food inside a box and close it up. Have your Saint Dane use those big paws and excellent sense of smell to find the treat and open the box.

Conclusion

Saint Danes are amazing dogs and perfect for anyone who likes big pups. They are sociable, good with other pets and kids and while they do require some exercise, they are not too high energy. These activities will keep you and your Saint Dane entertained. From outdoor excursions to play dates to learning how to track, your Saint Dane will love all of these games and the diversity in play will ensure that your pup is never bored.
