Introduction

A Smooth Poxer is a cross between a Pug and a Smooth Fox Terrier. They get all their attitude and energy from the Smooth Fox Terrier, but their loyalty, affection, and trust from the Pug. Crossing these two breeds creates a beautiful dog that integrates into family life well. They love kids, other animals, and enjoy having fun as well. They also don’t mind cuddling up to you or going for walks around the block. This easy-going and fun dog loves and trusts everyone, even if they can be a little crabby and snappy sometimes. Try these activities if you want them to live life to the fullest.

Activity description

When you own a Pug or even a Pug-cross such as a Smooth Poxer, you run the risk of your pup having a brachycephalic snout. In this instance, your dog can find it hard to breathe – especially during high levels of exercise or heat. Particularly in the sun, it’s important to provide low key activities that will help to cool your dog down. Unfortunately, if a Pug with a brachycephalic snout overheats or overexerts themselves, they can go into cardiac arrest. That’s why these fun water activities are so important. Give them something fun to do, but something that will also cool them down on a hot day. They are also affordable, easy to do, and take only half an hour with a few water accessories and toys.

Step
1
Water Treat
If you are worried about your Smooth Poxer’s hydration levels on a hot day, then consider making them a water treat. You will need a balloon, food, and water. Fill the balloon with water to around the size of a tennis ball. Add a few treats such as carrots and frozen vegetables. Put it in the freezer until it’s solid. Remove the rubber skin and give the ball to your dog. They can then roll it around the yard, getting as much water as they need to cool down while having fun at the same time.
Step
2
Bath
Another fun activity, which is also beneficial if your Smooth Poxer is dirty, is putting them in a baby bath. On a hot day, keep the water below lukewarm and add a few treats. They can let the water cool down their body temperature while giving you the opportunity to wash them.
Step
3
Paddling pool
If you have children, then this is an excellent activity for your Smooth Poxer and them as well. Put up the paddling pool and add enough water so it will cover the dog’s legs but sits below their neck. Add a few treats and toys into the pool and encourage your dog to get in. Make sure you don’t overexert them. The paddling pool is a way in which to stop your Smooth Poxer from overheating.

Activity description

It seems like every activity for your dog these days costs a fortune, which is why a trip to the dog park can be a breath of fresh air. You can put your wallet away because it doesn’t cost a dime, and it’s also a straightforward activity your Smooth Poxer will love. What’s more, it’s only going to take up 30 minutes of your time, but will tire your dog out for the day. On a sunny day, gather up your furry friend, hunt down a waste bag and toy, clip on their harness, and hit the road. It’s time to head to the dog park!

Step
1
Pick a park
Smooth Poxers can often have quite complex requirements. While they want to play with all dogs and any dogs, they can also go into moods where they don’t want to play with anyone at all. Choose your timing and choose your park. Find one that can offer solid fencing, a separate area for small dogs, and comfortable facilities for owners. If you want to supervise, it’s nice to be able to do it from the comfort of a park bench!
Step
2
Play
Once you are in the dog park, you can help your dog to find some friends and let them play. Give them the toy and supervise from a distance. After 30 minutes of playing at the park, meeting new dogs and smelling new scents, you can then wander off home where your Smooth Poxer is bound to sleep for the rest of the day!

Activity description

If you don’t have a yard or it’s too wet and miserable to take advantage of it, then you will need to have some indoor activities up your sleeve. DIY food puzzles could be it. Smooth Poxers get their intelligence from the Fox Terrier parentage, and it doesn’t take them long to master any problem you throw their way. But, will they tackle these? When you create puzzles at home, you benefit from being able to flex your creative muscles while providing your pup with something to do. It’s affordable, takes them at least an hour to work out, and you only need items you have lying around the home. Gather a pipe, treats, drill, ice cube tray, water, rope, and sweet potato, and let’s start!

Step
1
Ice cube treats
If you have an area that you don’t mind getting wet, then this DIY food puzzle is going to be a hoot for your four-legged friend. Fill a tray with water, then halfway through the freezing process, add a treat into the middle of each one. It could be a carrot chunk, green beans, or an apple slice. You can also flavor the water with low-salt broth if you want to give your dog a pleasant surprise. They can then spend a lot of time licking the ice cube to reveal the treat in the middle.
Step
2
Food shaker
Mind stimulation is essential for a Smooth Poxer, so you will find that a food shaker can offer that. Find a piece of PVC pipe lying around the house, clean it, then add a cap onto one end. Add kibble, then put a lid on the opposite end. You can then drill small holes randomly over the pipe large enough for kibble to escape. Your Smooth Poxer will love rolling it around the floor trying to get all the goodies out!
Step
3
Chew rope
Smooth Poxers are tough little chewers, which makes it a challenge to find them a toy they won’t destroy in seconds. Why not make one yourself and bring down the cost? Thread a rope out of an old t-shirt or use one you already have. Slice up a sweet potato in inch-thick pieces then dry it. Cut out the centers and thread it onto the rope. Your dog will enjoy the toughness as well as its sweetness.

Hydrotherapy

Is your Pug-cross a little porky? Get in touch with a hydrotherapy facility near you to get hydrotherapy sessions underway. Your Smooth Poxer can do laps and have fun in the water while benefiting their health at the same time. What’s more, you can get concession cards to make it more affordable, while utilizing high-tech equipment such as underwater treadmills.

Walk

If your dog has the short snout of a Pug, then you always have to be careful with how you exercise them. A nice walk can be an excellent option. Keep the walk’s length to around half an hour or less, and you can take them several times a day in mild weather. Avoid walking and exercises in hot weather.

Conclusion

A Smooth Poxer is a delightful dog that will fill your heart from day one. They don’t ask for a lot but do require some mental and physical activity to keep them in tip-top shape. Put your best paw forward and treat them to walks, swims, and even chew toys they can play with for hours. Don’t let man’s best friend down!
