Activity description
Welsh Wire Fox Terriers are natural born hunters. They have hunting in their blood from both sides of their genetic makeup which means they are going to want to hunt all the time, no matter what day, time or season! However, chances are that you aren't taking your pup out fox hunting every day, if ever. Using a mechanical toy will help simulate a real hunt and give your dog a true hunting experience. While it does cost a little to get a good mechanical dog toy, you can do this activity year round, especially when you can go outside with the toy and your dog and "hunt" in the open air!
Step
1
Toy search
Find a good mechanical dog toy that will hold up with a lot of use - your Welsh Wire Fox Terrier will want to use it all the time! Look for a toy that can move in all directions via remote control. One that is fuzzy and fox shape would be even better! If you are struggling to find what you are looking for, consider putting a stuffed animal on top of a remote controlled kids toy car - it'll work great!
Step
2
Toy introduction
Before making the new mechanical fox go super fast, let your dog sniff it and get used to it while stationary on the ground. Your Welsh Wire Fox Terrier will likely sniff the toy, circle it a few times and maybe even try to pick it up! No matter what, they will be excited. Time to make them go crazy!
Step
3
Go, go, go!
Grab the toy remote and make it go forward as fast as possible. Your Welsh Wire Fox Terrier will spring into action and start chasing the toy right away! Make the toy go in all different directions, even under bushes, just as a fox would. Keep the toy just out of reach from your dog to keep the fun going for hours.

Activity description
Welsh Wire Fox Terriers love to run due to that hunting background - they could chase a fox for hours! Since most Welsh Wire Fox Terriers are house pups, that means they don't always have the chance to go for long runs as nature intended them to. Training your dog to use a treadmill is a fantastic way to ensure they get enough exercise year round (no more long walks in the snow!). Treadmills can be a little pricey but you can opt for a lower end model if you intend to use it solely for your dog who doesn't need all the bells and whistles of the more expensive brands.
Step
1
Introduction
Bring your dog into the room with the new treadmill and let them approach the machine on their own accord. Let your dog freely sniff the treadmill, stand up on top and circle it as many times as they'd like. You can even choose to wait a few days before turning the treadmill on to make sure your dog is comfortable with the new object in their home.
Step
2
Walk slowly
Put your dog's collar and leash on to signal to them that you are going for a walk. Lead your dog to the treadmill and encourage them to get on it using treats. Turn the treadmill on slowly and put a treat in front of your pup's nose so that they move forward. Keep the speed on low and keep a steady show of treats coming so that your dog gets used to walking on the moving belt. Hold on to the leash the whole time to keep up that "going for a walk" idea.
Step
3
Go faster
Once your Welsh Wire Fox Terrier enjoys walking on the treadmill, make it go a little faster and then faster still! Soon your dog will be trotting along at a great run. Use the treadmill as frequently as you'd like, every day if possible, to keep your dog happy and well exercised. Always be sure to stay in the room with the pup in case of any mechanical issues.

Activity description
As you already know, your Welsh Wire Fox Terrier needs to get a lot of exercise and the more creative ways you have to help them achieve this goal, the better! This breed is perfect for visiting the dog park as they are friendly, love to play with other pups and will do well in a fenced in area (they can be escape artists so a secure dog park is perfect for these pups). Be sure to keep your dog's collar on at the dog park so you can quickly grab them if needed. Dog parks are best when the weather is nice and you don't mind being outside and most are free!
Step
1
Walk and check
When you first arrive at the dog park, keep your Welsh Wire Fox Terrier on their leash and walk the perimeter of the park to ensure all gates are closed. Then, let your dog go free. They will likely start off by sniffing everything and "marking" a few things, keeping to themselves before starting to play.
Step
2
Play ball
Throw a tennis ball in the dog park for your Welsh Wire Fox Terrier and the other dog friends to chase. All of the dogs in the park will get excited about this game and it will encourage your dog to play with the other pups. Of course, playing fetch will also satisfy your dog's need to chase and hunt as well.
Step
3
Playdates
If your dog tends to play with certain dogs more than others while at the dog park, introduce yourself to the dog owners. Set up times when you will both bring your dogs to the park so they can play with their friends. This is also a great way to make a few new human friends as well! Maybe your dog and their new friend will take their relationship out of the dog park and they can even visit your house for playdates - anything to keep that active Welsh Wire Fox Terrier happy!
