Introduction

Wetterhouns are beautiful dogs of a medium size with a thick and curly coat. They make brilliant family pets, are exceptionally tolerant of children, and make loyal yet gentle guard dogs as well. However, their most significant trait is their retrieval skill both on land and in the water. Traditionally, people would use them for hunting waterfowl and for guarding, but by World War II, Wetterhouns were almost an extinct breed. Through careful and select breeding, the breed is finally gaining popularity, mainly as a family pet. If you’re the lucky owner of a Wetterhoun and you want to spoil them with fun activities, you can find a few of the many options below.

If you own a Wetterhoun, there’s every reason to believe you want to use their duck hunting skills to your advantage. After all, while they make an ideal family pet, they are a rare breed which means hunters want to own them. As a result, if you want something for your Wetterhoun to do, give them a job to do – hunt ducks. When duck hunting season rolls around, which is typically in any weather, plan for a day of hunting. Pack food and water and your pup’s leash and get ready to go. You’re sure to find they are more than up to the challenge.

Step
1
Hunting location
The first step is to locate an ideal hunting location that will be suitable for your needs, the legalities, and the time of year. Duck hunting season is not typically year-round, and many states have different laws for what you can and can’t hunt. Therefore, it’s a good idea to find a hunting location by doing your research. Charleston in South Carolina, Seattle in Washington, and St. Paul Island in Alaska are a few of the prime duck hunting spots you may like to visit.
Step
2
Prepare gear
Even if you only plan on going away for the day, you need to make sure both you and man’s best friend have everything you need for the journey. Failure to prepare for any eventuality can put you both in a situation in which you’d rather not be. Therefore, you need to write a list, pack a bag, then check you have everything. Your dog will need a coat, plenty of food and water, while you’ll need a first aid kit, food and water, warm clothes, communication devices and, of course, your ammo and gun.
Step
3
Go hunting
Now that you’re ready, it’s time to get going. Tell your loved ones where you will be and when you’ll be home, then hit the road. Young Wetterhouns learn very quickly how to retrieve ducks, so you’ll find that even if it’s their first adventure, they will astound you with their talents. However, remember to have patience and understanding. Wetterhouns respond well only to positive praise.

Activity description

Given your pup’s natural desire to be in the water, it’s a great idea to take them to your local river or beach when the summer heat is too much to bear. Not only do you reap the rewards of a refreshing swim, but so too will your pup. What’s more, Wetterhoun fur tends to dry quite quickly, while being somewhat water-resistant as well. Therefore, you won’t have to worry about spending hours with a comb and blow dryer. All you need to do is choose a location, grab a leash and a toy and head to the beach for an hour of play.

Step
1
Find a beach
There are many fun beaches in the United States, including those off the beaten track that tourists and families tend not to frequent. If you want the space and freedom to run around with your pup, then do your research. Find a beach that has a hidden access point, or walk or drive miles along a beach to get to a quieter area. You will find that the fewer people there are, the more attentive your dog is to your requests.
Step
2
Play
For a dog such as a Wetterhoun, the thought of retrieving something from the water is exciting. Therefore, they will love chasing a toy you throw into the water then bringing it back to you. Even after an hour, they’ll repeat the process until it’s time to go home. However, you can also change it up a little by running with them along the beach, playing tug of war, or swimming with them in the water.

Activity description

Wetterhouns require a significant amount of exercise. After all, people bred them for use in hunting environments, so they are adept at walking and running for miles. Therefore, if you find yourself in ownership of one, you need to ensure you can dedicate at least one hour per day to their requirements. A long walk is a good idea, and is both free and easy to do. What’s more, all you need for the trip is a leash and a doggy waste bag. If you can find a secluded field for them to run and chase, even better, but if not, a trip around your town’s streets will suffice.

Step
1
Plan
If you have made a plan to include an hour of walking and exercise per day for you and your furry friend, then it’s a good idea to have a plan of attack. Both you and your pup may soon tire of the same traveled route, so try and find wide open spaces for them to run and walk in as well. You can plan bush walks, neighborhood strolls, and even trips through local parks. Change it up a little each day, and neither of you will grow tired of the journey.
Step
2
Go walking
Now that you know your route, it’s time to go for a walk. All you need to do is put your dog on a leash and take a doggy bag with you, and you’re ready to go. Remember, in scorching temperatures you will find it’s best to avoid a walk that day. While you can wear shoes on hot pavement, your pup can’t. Therefore, you run the risk of burning their paw pads. Instead, walk them early in the morning or after the heat of the day, or change it up by going for a swim instead.

Obedience Training

Wetterhouns love to please their owners, so you will find puppy training is going to be far easier with this breed than with many others. They are persistent, always want to get the job done right, and will continue to do what you ask until they succeed. In essence, they are a faithful and loyal pup that thinks the world of their owners. To find a puppy training class, look online, in your phonebook, or talk to people. Classes typically run for between six and eight weeks for an hour or two per week.

Hunting

While duck hunting is one of the main activities above, on-land trips are also something at which Wetterhouns excel. Therefore, if you find yourself in need of meat for the freezer, take your pooch on a hunting expedition. Even if you are away for an entire weekend, they will continue to surprise you with their adaptability, keen eye, and thrill for the hunt.

Conclusion

Wetterhouns tick all the boxes as they not only make faithful hunting acquaintances but loving family pets as well. If you’re waiting for hunting season to begin, don’t furget to try any of these activities above. They are all methods for not only keeping your pup entertained but for keeping them in shape for when the real fun begins.Â
