The French Bulldog, nicknamed the Frenchie, is a small breed of Bulldog originally developed in the 1800s as a companion dog despite that their progenitors were developed to help with bull-baiting and pit fighting.  They were developed in Normandy, France as a companion and today enjoy the same role. Unfortunately, this playful pup is plagued by many potential health concerns and requires a loving home to look out for them.  Despite common health concerns, this pooch is very easy to keep and does not require much exercise.  However, this breed, being developed for companionship, requires a lot of human interaction. Otherwise, this little dog may develop destructive habits.

French Bulldog Breed History

The French Bulldog is a descendant of the ancient Molossian, which gave rise to the Mastiffs and later the Bulldogs. The Frenchie's Bulldog ancestor was originally bred for bull-baiting and then later for blood sport.

However, as England and the rest of Europe made blood sports illegal, the English Bulldog was soon found to be without a job.  The English Bulldog was later outcrossed with small Terriers to reduce the Bulldog's size; thus giving rise to the line that would become the French Bulldog.

The crossed English Bulldogs considered too small for English tastes were exported to France where they became in vogue as society companions to both high- and low-brow people.  These popular pups soon made their way west to the United States and by 1898, they were accepted as a companion breed by the American Kennel Club.

They continued to rise in popularity in Western Europe and the United States equally, and were considered a social status symbol. At the turn of the 20th century, some of them sold for as much as $3,000, which is equivalent to $35,000 today.

Today, this little charmer still enjoys massive popularity. In 2023, the French Bulldog became the most pawpular breed in America, beating out the Labrador Retriever, a breed that was top dog for 30+ years.

This increased popularity and demand for the breed has led to an illegal puppy trade and puppy mills that have less-than-safe practices.  This petite pup has the potential to have more congenital and developed health issues than many other small breeds, not to mention more than 81% of all litters must be delivered by cesarean (C-section).

French Bulldog Breed Appearance

The coat of a French Bulldog is smooth, short, and fine. Though many of these dogs are born with black coats with markings and no brindle, these color combinations disqualify a standard Frenchie. The average pup is heavy boned with a curious, alert look on their face. 

The head is large and square with dark, moderate-sized round eyes set far apart. Lighter eyes may be present in lighter coated dogs.

The Frenchie’s ears are called “bat ears” because they are broad based, long, and end with rounded tips. The ears are carried erect and face forward, and the skull is flat between the ears.

The muzzle is broad and laid back with a black nose. The upper lip is thick and hangs over the lower jaw at the sides. The underjaw is deep, square-shaped, and undershot.

This stout pooch's forelegs are short and muscular and set wide apart. The feet and toes are compact and well split up. The hindquarters are slightly longer than the forelegs and strong, setting the loins above the shoulder at a downward angle. Like the forefeet and toes, the hind feet and toes are compact and split up. The tail is short but can be screwed, but never curly, and hung low with a thick root and fine tip.

French Bulldog Breed Maintenance

The coat of this compact dog is easy to maintain with minimal brushing. Brushing your Frenchie once a week is sufficient to keep them clean and well groomed. Bathing and shampooing should be avoided, if possible, due to this breed's increased chance of developing dermatitis. Excessive bathing will strip much-needed oils that keep the skin healthy. 

The French Bulldog can have loose and wrinkled skin, especially on their face, and should be checked for dirt and debris to prevent infections. Unfortunately, they are prone to tooth and mouth disease, so it is recommended that you brush their teeth at least three times a week and annual dental hygiene visits are highly recommended. 

You should only use approved tools and cleaning agents recommended by your veterinarian or canine dental hygienist and consult with them to learn the best method of cleaning your dog's teeth. This serene dog is docile and well suited for apartment and urban living and they are quiet and not very active.  The Frenchie doesn't tolerate too hot or too cold of climates and allergies can be a problem for this breed, so indoor living is preferred.

How much you feed your dog will depend on your friendly companion's age and metabolism. Small dogs like Frenchies typically require 1 to 1.5 cups of food divided into 2 meals daily. This breed is not very active and is small, so overfeeding can easily occur.

French Bulldog Temperament

Like many other dogs bred for companionship, the French Bulldog requires a lot of interaction and close contact with their owner or they can develop separation anxiety.  Destructive behaviors may develop if they are ignored for too long.  This breed is very affectionate with kids, and female French Bulldogs tend to be protective of children.  When introduced to dogs at a young age, this breed is exceptionally friendly towards other dogs as well as amicable towards strangers. These calm dogs are not known to bark unless they are looking for attention and they require minimal exercise due to their low energy level.  Strenuous physical activity is not recommended due to their brachycephalic complex and related difficulties with respiratory functions. Training, as with other breeds, requires patience.  This sociable pup is intelligent, although not known to be overly smart or driven.  They enjoy a much slower pace, yet have a great love for their owners.  The potential to wander off is low, but you should always keep your dog on a lead and close by you. 

French Bulldog Activity Requirements

A young French Bulldog will be most content with a daily trip to the dog park as well as a twice-a-day promenade to view the happenings in the neighborhood. As this breed matures, their needs will change as their activity level decreases. A walk once a day in addition to their bathroom breaks will be sufficient to keep them happy. Their love for attention will not decrease however, so be sure to spend time with your Frenchie in the yard as this breed loves to run and explore like all dogs do. If you and your dog are apartment dwellers,  outdoor diversions are still a must; a quick visit to the local dog run will go a long way. Because the French Bulldog can be prone to back issues like intervertebral disc disease, care should be taken to limit stairs and jumping. Their tolerance to heat is less than that of other breeds owing to their short face and smaller nose; humidity is a factor, too, in how much exercise or walk time your best buddy can take on a given day. Shade and plenty of water to drink are essential for this canine. Take note, however, that the French Bulldog is not a good swimmer. Never leave them unattended around the pool or pond.

Frenchies are very sweet, good tempered, and nice dogs to walk. They are very affectionate and often enjoy being pet and held. They like going for walks and are nice and well behaved with other dogs. They don't need to be walked very far because they have small legs and are not too stubborn. They can be excitable but are generally mellow dogs and are content sitting and being held. They are intelligent and sweet dogs that are very good companions.

The French Bulldog I walked was very stubborn, but she was just a puppy, so she may have just been getting used to walking on a leash. She did not want to go back home. She kept laying down and wouldn't walk. It took a lot of work, but I got her home eventually.

Ozzie and the other frenchie's I've walked are very similar in that they are super friendly and love to have a fun cruise. Very obedient and trainable. No drama dog but this is due to their owners. The best part about Frenchie's is their playfulness. Always down for a play and a wrestle. I've been walking Ozzie and a bunch of Frenchie's for about 2 years now and I've never had a bad experience. This again is due to the great owners and the training they've provided. I would recommend Frenchie's for active and playful people. they are a lot of work but worth the effort I think.

French bulldogs are so funny. They generally love people. The ones that I've walked tend to have huge bursts of energy and get really excited/happy to see you or other dogs, and then get kind of tuckered out soon after. They're generally good with other dogs, very social and just excited to be alive. I've had a couple lay down in the middle of the sidewalk because they were done walking for the day. A few belly rubs and some hype usually get them moving again.

The French Bulldogs that I have walked have all been so lovely. They are always very friendly but are not overly affectionate. They like to take the walks at a pretty slow pace and are very curious when out and about. They do not seem to like the cold or rain, and when I've walked them in the snow their feet seem to get very irritated, so I've noticed some owners have boots or shoes for the colder weather for them.

Very disturbing experience with this breed several times. I find that this breed is very aggressive, love to bite and attack you. After this experience, I started having a fear of certain dogs. I woulnt ever suggest for anybody to get this breed. Horrible breed!

Allegedly, one of the ones I walked enjoys the dog park. However when I walked him, he did not want to walk at all, much less all the way to a park. They can be temperamental and stubborn, and not very active. Seems to be in their nature to do as they please, so they don't care if you're here to walk them for 30+ minutes, if they want to go home, they'll go right home! That said, very friendly and sweet, receptive to new people, relaxed, quiet. But, like bulldogs, can be susceptible to joint problems and breathing problems. So slow, relaxed walks are best. It's best not to rush them or expect too much. Also a couple I've interacted with don't like being picked up, while another was totally fine with that, and a lot more vocal. It can truly vary from dog to dog.

French Bulldogs are by far my favorite breed of dog! The two that I walked where to little compact balls of energy! They were very affectionate and loving but also love playing. We walked for about an hour and they still had so much energy! They seem to be in really good health and had no two little skin issues as some Bulldog suffer from. Overall these are really great family dogs especially if you have children because of their energy level

Almost every frenchie I have walked has been stubborn and lazy. Frenchies give up on their walks right after they have started. They like to lay down in the middle of the road or sidewalk. They give up very easily and a lot of times refuse to do what you tell them. But besides this, frenchies are very very sweet when you pet them, hold them, and give them love. They are super friendly and smiley and love to meet new people and dogs.

This dog was so cute! She was very young, so she was very curious and full of energy. She was very happy to meet new people, get picked up, sniff other dogs, and run around. She was not particularly food motivated and quite uninterested in eating dinner before her walk. Training may be difficult without the ability to provide a reward that the dog is especially excited about. Since French Bulldogs have short coats, grooming is fairly low-maintenance. They do shed a good amount though, so grooming may be necessary to keep shedding at a minimum. This dog seems to get along with all people and also with all other dogs that we rain into. She would give a friendly sniff and then would jump and run around. Lots of fun!

The dog I walk is such a puppy and doesn't know too many of her commands. She knows how to sit for a treat, and her name. But that's about it. It is however a bit easy to train them. Though they can be forgetful. She knows the phrase, "come here" and will come when she feels like it. Which is usually at the very moment. Usually. She can't open her mouth quite wide but will try to eat whatever it is she can fit in the small opening of her mouth. Non agressive, very excited to met people.

The French Bulldog loved human interaction.
This particular French Bulldog was not particularly well-trained on a leash. This particular young female was not found of walking and preferred being outdoors only to "use the facilities." However, utilizing treats and verbal praise were very successful in building motivation to follow my lead. She was very affectionate, would stand on her short hind legs to reach my face for kisses. She was very social but seemed very loyal to her owner.

The frenchie that I walk is extremely smart!Her mom and I have successfully trained her how to sit and do paw with training treats! She is very treat motivated and very smart! She is also super active for such a little dog! She walks at a pretty fast pace and we can do about a mile and a half in 30 minutes which is pretty fast! She likes to jump on tall surfaces and smell just about everything! She is very affectionate but takes a little time to really let you pet her as you're sitting with her. She jumps up to greet everyone but she get shy at some points but loves the attention and love!

French bulldogs are the sweetest of all breeds, in my opinion. They're very trusting. And they're also very quiet. The ones that I've walked don't make a sound when I walk in, I usually have to look for them. They do get overheated very easily so walking them in the shade or in the evening/early morning when the sun's not terrible (especially down here in Florida) is the best time if you actually want to get anywhere. Otherwise, you got about a 5-10 minute walk tops. They looooove a good butt scratch and belly rub. That's how you get them to do that cute little pig snort.

French bulldogs are adorable little bundles of energy. Like crazy energy, especially if they're puppies obviously. They're pretty smart, which is a good and bad thing! They can try to play tricks so to get that stick he must absolutely chew, but listens pretty well with basic commends with minimal training. They're also incredibly agile, the jumping and twisting in the air is gymnastical (not a word, but it works). Sweet natured pups too, much like their meatier cousins the bulldog, but way less slobbery.

This French Bulldog seemed livelier than most bulldogs and was very excitable and had a lot of energy on our walk. People love French Bulldogs and will stop you to pet them. The Frenchie did not seem to mind the attention at all. The Frenchie was easily distracted and a bit all over the place, but Frenchies are so small, he was still easy to control. I do not think French Bulldogs are particularly intelligent, but they have big personalities and love treats. French Bulldogs seem to get along well with other dogs and people. Like other bulldogs, Frenchies are loud breathers due to the configuration of their noses and should not be over-exercised. This French Bulldog did not seem to notice that it was smaller than other dogs and played with large dogs as if it were their size.

French bulldogs are not a generally healthy breed of dog. They have a lot of health issues like difficulty breathing that make them not a great match for more active lifestyles. They are very stubborn so even if trained, they'll only listen if they want to. They're chill for the most part and sleep a lot. They snore louder than most people and sometimes drool. Some of them have inverted tails and need to be wiped. They have perky ears that are very cute and they love to cuddle. Sometimes pee where they shouldn't.

Oscar was very stubborn when I began walking him. I was told by the owner that he LOVES Petco around the corner, but he isn't allowed to go because he makes too big of a scene. He's impossible to calm down and disturbs the other animals. So I would generally have to pick him up and carry him to the park. Once we got to the park he was a little bit more agreeable. He would only walk on his terms, and would generally walk very slowly or not at all. I found this to be a little bizarre because he was a younger dog (about one to two years old) and should have plenty of energy. I attributed this to the fact that he may have been stuck in his crate for too long, and doesn't feel happy when he moves around.

This one was a little stubborn. He didn't want to walk and when he was finished peeing, he really wanted to go back in inside. I had treats with me, so i was able to get him to walk more, but at every corner he wanted to go back. We finally did get back to the house and he enjoyed playing with the ball and being pet. He was a very sweet, calm dog, that just didn't want to go outside.

I've walked a few French bulldogs and each time it is extremely amusing. My husband has had a love for these dogs and so I decided to walk them and spend time with them to see if it was a breed that I would enjoy having. I walked 2 together, a male and a female, and it was the funniest walk I've had so far. The female I'll call her princess, liked to scoot along on her belly and snorted quite a bit. She was slightly overweight which made this behavior even funnier becauseshe sounded like a little pig snorting as she did it. She was the sweetest dog and super affectionate. She would give me plenty of kisses and a little nip on the nose when I sat down on the ground with her. She could not walk too far and 30 minutes was enough for both of the dogs. I enjoyed walking with them but we did not get very far because of their short legs and constant sniffing. Princess had the best personality and the best smile. She was completely goofy in her behavior and I could see why this is a well loved breed. While I don't think I will invest in a French bulldog I definitely will walk them again and spend time with them. They are truly adorable!

The French Bulldog I walked was very well behaved, but she had low energy. She got cold very easily outside! It was about 35 degrees and she was shivering. She did not want to walk when we first got outside. I had to carry her down the street to get her away from her front door. Once she couldn't see the door, she walked for a couple of blocks and peed. She would stop to sniff things and then refuse to move. I had to carry her a few times. Overall, she was very sweet. Just a bit stubborn!

The French Bulldog that I walked was very friendly. Her name was Betty. She seemed to know her way around the neighborhood and didn't really gets spooked by anything. Betty was the first time I walked a French Bulldog and I really enjoyed it. I would like to walk french Bulldogs again soon. French Bulldogs seem to be easy dogs to walk. In New York City there are a lot of French bulldogs. This French Bulldog that I walked was very happy and strong, but she wasn't as strong as other dogs that I've walked such as bigger breeds. My experience with Betty was a rather good experience. It was actually one of the better experiences I had walking a dog that I haven't met before. The French Bulldog that I walked I knew her way around the neighborhood and she also knew where she wanted to go. She was sometimes. And she didn't want to go the other way that I tried to go. You wouldn't have to go the way that she wanted to. I haven't really encountered many small dogs before Betty. I usually walked bigger breeds of dogs. The French Bulldog was a breed of dog that I never really encountered. And I was really glad to have the opportunity to have met Betty, who was the first french Bulldog I met. I walked her in New York City. She was very playful but not as playful as other little dogs that I've encountered before. She was the type of dog who knew her way around. And if she wanted something she would go for it. She didn't seem to be triggered by anything such as Birds girls or other dogs. But it could be just because that she wasn't to interactive with other creatures or that french bulldogs don't easily get triggered by other things easily as some other dogs would. A French Bulldog is a small dog but at the same time they seem like a big dog. If Betty were with other dogs she would probably being the leader of the pack. Because during our walk she seemed to be the one who guided me around the city rather than me taking her somewhere. Betty was a really lovely dog to walk. I would really like to walk more French Bulldogs in the future if possible. I would even consider adopting a French Bulldog myself in the near future.

My experience walking French Bulldogs have been great. While most are extremely energetic at first, they quickly settle down after going for a walk. I have found that most of them really only walking distance wise for about a half hour as their short legs do get tired. Every time I have walked a French Bulldog for more than half an hour, they are planting their feet by the end of the walk and are tired out. I have never met an unfriendly French Bulldog and am always greeted with lots of love and kisses from them.

These dogs are very sweet. At first the pup was timid when I walked in, but once you show them you are there to be their friend, he leaped off the couch and jumped into my lap. This little guy is fairly new to this world, so he was timid towards walking far from his home as well as in the grass. Now he is a little older so he enjoys walking a little bit more. He was more of sniffer than anything. With all puppies you must be patient and be consistent with them. He is very easygoing, playful, sociable, alert and somewhat athletic. He jumps pretty high but be careful because puppies bones aren't fully developed and you don't want them to sprain or break a leg especially since this one only likes to walk on the sidewalk and not so much the grass. They don't like to be alone too much nor does any breed being that dogs are "pack dogs" meaning they live in packs and just like humans need a lot of love and attention. Much like the boxer with the short noses they can have breathing issues so in extremely hot weather they can over heat and in cold weather they get cold (around 80 and up be cautious and bring water, and 60 and below they may get cold). Basically, if your hot they're hot and if your cold they're probably cold too. This particular breed is very easy to walk vs. larger breeds per say a Husky. They need more exercise as well because they have the potential for weight gain and that can also lead to breathing issues as well as other health issues.

French Bulldogs seem to be everywhere in New York City, and for a reason. These dogs are great apartment dogs, as even when they get a serious case of the zoomies, they tend to be perfectly happy running around a living room. The frenchie I walked was very active for a little one, but was content with a relatively slow walking pace, and more leisurely exploring. She was a little jumpy when I came in, and eager to play tug before I left, but she has a very sweet energy, and is overall a very happy dog! They do tend to pull a decent amount on walks, and like most bully dogs, can overheat and have trouble breathing if the temperature gets too high, so I try to take extra precautions with them to make sure they can regulate their temp.

This Frenchie was young and had all the energy of a puppy. He was a very muscular, chunky little pup. He was extremely excited to see me and would jump up to say hello. Unfortunately his nails were very sharp and he scratched me up! It was kind of hard to get the harness and leash on because he was so hyper and wanted to play. On the walk he pulled a little bit and definitely loved to run. He would take his time sniffing and then would randomly take off in a sprint! He also was obsessed with pine cones; if he saw a one he would sprint to it, play with it, and carry it home. He liked running and exercising but once he saw the house again he pulled towards home. He was a cute guy but definitely needs an owner/walker with a lot of energy!

The Frenchie that I walked was incredibly sweet, but very stubborn. She was very lazy and didn't want to leave the apartment, so I had to pick her up and walk her a block away so she would run back to the apartment. She was very affectionate and a perfect city dog because she likes to hang in the apartment! My experience walking a French Bulldog was great! He was excited to greet me and was very sweet. He definitely seemed very attached to his owner. When we first began our walk, he seemed a little homesick, and wouldn’t budge from the sidewalk in front of the house. It took some sweet talking and petting, but he finally took off with me. Once he did he became the boss of the walk and of the neighborhood. He knew exactly where to go and simply couldn’t walk fast enough. He loved to sniff anything and everything in sight, but I didn’t have to worry much about him putting anything harmful in his mouth. This boy loved a good run and didn’t seem to tire quickly. Once he warmed up to me, we had a great time!

My goodness French Bulldogs are so cute! They're so compact and powerful! They're ears are super expressive and often times pretty silly. The French Bulldog that I've walked was very friendly and excited to go on a walk. They whined when I left after playing a bit of tug of war with them, so they like to have lots of company and stimulation. He had a habit of kicking the dirt over his poo/pee with his hind legs and then charing forward like he had a very important destination in mind that never failed to crack me up! He was very curious and tried to eat a lot of random stuff on the street but was very good about listening to me when I told him that probably wasn't a good idea and he should drop it. His spotting was also super cute and he's a great size to snuggle up with as a lapdog.

These dogs are super cool and friendly. I walked about 3 different french bulldogs. They love to play and take charge. If you know how to keep them focused they will listen well. They're kinda strong for some little cute dogs. They will definitely keep you entertained and put a smile on your face. The French bulldog is always trying to sniff out food laying around on the city streets so keep an eye out. This is my personal experience on what I see with this breed. Other dogs do it too but the french bulldog is on the search for food as soon as he steps outside. Other than that I love french bulldogs they seem extremely easy to get along with. A very appealing breed which makes a comfortable bond with dogs and humans . Their face expressions are unique in character . You can see the confusion on their faces when their trying to understand a situation. I would one day like to get a french bulldog in the near future. It would be one of my top two choices to select from. My other choice would be a small American Stafford Terrier.

It is always such a pleasure to walk with a Frenchie! They each have such distinct personalities! My most memorable walk with a Frenchie was with Franklin in Midtown Manhattan. His wide smile drew the attention of many/all passersby on our walk! He was such a sweet boy, and greeted everyone that approached with kisses and tail wiggles! He was super playful, and wanted to play tug of war with his leash for a good part of the walk! When we returned to his apartment, we chased each other around the living room coffee table before I finally corralled him into his crate! Frenchies are so energetic and lovable, they are one of my favorite breeds to walk with - I’m thinking I would one day love to have a Frenchie nugget of my own!

I have had the pleasure to walk several French Bulldogs ranging in age from very young puppies to more mature dogs. In my experience, they are very friendly and social especially inside their homes. They will come to greet you at the door and often jump up a little bit to say hello. Pepper, the 5-year-old Frenchie who I've walked many times, will always come to greet me and then immediately run over to her toy area and find a toy to bring to me. She absolutely loves playing tug-of-war and will hold one side of her toy in her mouth while holding the other side out to me for me to grab. She never gets tired of this! She will also fetch if I manage to grab the toy from her and toss it away but defintiely prefers to play tug-of-war. She gets super excited when I pick up her harness and sometimes it takes a minute to get her to calm down enough to get it on. Pepper is an extremely fast walker and loves to find things to sniff. Even though she's a smaller dog, we usually cover as much ground during a thirty minute walk as I do with a larger dog. She can get a bit stubborn when it comes to picking her route and will pull in the direction she wants to go so I usually let her lead the way rather than trying to direct her. She also tends to walk at a much slower pace once we start getting close to her house and she realizes the walk will be over soon. Her behavior around other dogs varies-- I've seen her be friendly and I've also had to pull her away from other dogs because she starts barking. But she never has a problem with people and is friendly to everyone we pass on the street. Ziggy, the 6-month-old Frenchie puppy I walked, was still getting the hang of his leash and needed a bit more direction than an older dog. He got distracted very easily and would stop walking to watch skateboarders or other dogs. He also loved playing tug-of-war and grabbed my shoe a few times with his mouth while we were out walking! Verbal encouragement and trying to keep him going at a steady pace worked pretty well to keep him walking. Both Pepper and Ziggy love to sniff things on the ground and will pick up lots of things in their mouth if you let them, so it's important to watch out for that.

I have walked one French Bulldog before and have walked her a few times. She was very excited every time I would arrive and on her walk she was a bit of a handful. She loved trying to find things to eat off the ground, so I needed to make sure to watch her carefully with that. Towards the middle and end of her walk, she would just freeze and would refuse to walk any further. I would entice her with treats, which would work for a little bit, but she would then refuse to walk again. She was a stubborn and cute little pup, we just wouldn’t make it too far on her walks.

French Bulldogs have strong, incredibly entertaining personalities that make them so much fun to have around. They love to be around their people and are generally very social. The French Bulldog I walk moves pretty quick and enjoys exploring the neighborhood around his friends. Sometimes he isn’t in the mood for walking though, especially when it’s cold, and will try to go into other homes or stores that look warm for a break. Some French Bulldogs are known to have allergies, so keep a close eye on their diet to ensure they stay as happy and healthy as possible. They like to play with sticks and toys. As an added bonus, they look adorable in stylish little coats! I always get a lot of compliments while walking my furry friend.

French Bulldogs can have many different temperaments. Some are very outgoing and sociable while others tend to be on the shyer side and can have alpha, dominant personality traits. Overall, this dog breed is very friendly and playful, smart and responsive, and good at communicating. A popular pet for their size, short hair, and cuteness, and less maintenance than other bulldog breeds. Many dog breeds with short noses tend to have breathing problems, but Frenchies are still very active dogs. They love affection and attention and make great companions. Frenchies come in all different colors and patterns, but all to be around the same size. These dogs age well for purebreds and are sure to bring a lot of fun and joy in to your life!

French bulldogs are like a more active and noticeably social counterpart to the more reserved and adagio English bulldog. I have worked with a couple of the former and I will now detail my first experience. Frenchs are more often than not much smaller than what typically comes to mind when someone mentions bulldogs. They look and coincidentally act more like pugs: they are invested in moving from here to there, constantly in search of the next thing to sniff/potential treat; their relatively taller, pointed ears help one to discern their many articulations and notices; they tend to look up to you, literally, unlike other bulldogs who feel more comfortable maintaining their independence. They tend too to be more receptive to commands and more trusting in general to the commands of a walker. French bulldogs are high-spirited and confident, bouncy and trusting, far from reluctant or seemingly stubborn. They are perfect for city life and adjust well/quickly to all family sizes. They love to play and bounce and the French bulldog I have in mind will declare tug of war on anyone who separates him from a potential treat he has found in the street, though in general they all seem to be quite forgiving in that regard: always, like all good dogs, eager to move on and continue exploring.

The following writing is based off my second experience with French bulldogs, who I have admired since I was child. They are incredibly adorable and as fun as they seem. Whenever I walk a French bulldog, I always have compliments to convey to the owners from passersby who cannot help but react to their amicable and highly social behavior. They love to inspect all kinds of store fronts and glass surfaces, either looking for treats or trying to make sense of the passing inclinations to return home: though they are more energized than other bulldog breeds, they tend to stay relatively reserved until they have been reunited with their owners (this was the case with this particular French that I currently have in mind, and it mirrors the sense for relationships which has been respected most in the English bulldogs I have encountered). In that sense, French bulldogs exhibit a classic, positive dog stereotype: they are incredibly loyal and active creatures whose trust is freely given, though in varying degrees. I can tell that this one French bulldog I have in mind was well trained, and this leads me to feel they are all inclined to believe in what they are taught. They seldom get riled up and they are one of the only breeds I’ve worked with who lean more toward staying quiet, no matter how excited they can get.

Napoleon may be one of my most favorite new regular walks. He's the goofiest little French Bulldog I've ever met. Several times upon my arrival he had had an accident in his cage which required cleaning up, but he seems to be picking up new skills and improved behavior every day. He's incentivized to learn tricks through his desire for treats, belly rubs, toys, or basically anything that is available. He is very positive, he adores attention, and is incredibly personable. From the first time I met him he has had less of a desire to walk and more of an interest in getting his belly rubbed. He will simply tip over during a walk and wait for you to interact with him. This has been something that has given me many belly laughs. The little guy is a glutton and is so absolutely adorable that there is little room for resistance. We often walk to the dog park together where he will happily play with a stick, a ball, any other friendly dogs, a stranger, or simply the awkwardness of his own puppy body. He's often seen romping and tumbling through the grass without any sort of prompting on my end. He's a fabulous walking companion.

The French bulldog I walked was a very sweet girl! The French bulldog may have been small, but she definitely packed a punch; she had such an immense energy the entire time she was on her walk. From the second I greeted her, the French bulldog was sweet and inviting. On our walk, the Frenchie loved to walk fast and was greeted by almost every single person we walked past. The Frenchie was by far the most popular breed I have walked so far; with so many people stopping to fawn over and praise her for her cuteness. The French bulldog’s health, coat, and attitude were all great and low maintenance! The French bulldog was a spunky breed that needed some slight training, but was overall a very enjoyable pup to walk!

The one I walked was curious but a little cautious. Once she warmed up to me, she listened very well and we had an nice calm walk. looked forward to her treat at the end as well.

First appearance wise, French bulldogs differ in that they have shorter legs and a more muscular build, large, square-shaped head, an overall larger bone structure and rounded tips on their bat-like ears. French bulldogs also have a greater variety of fur color than the boston terrier which has a tuxedo like markings. Next personality wise, Frenchies are more stubborn than Bostons, and dont require quite as much exercise. They are are more on the relaxed side due to their heavier build, which makes them less agile when it comes to running and jumping. Both breeds have short coats, making grooming very low maintenance. Since their hair is so short, there is little to no odor, and mild shedding depending on the season. Frenchies are by no means stupid even though they are stubborn and hard to train. They just require a lot of patience and are indeed very intelligent.

French bulldogs are the sweetest! I’ve had wonderful experiences with all the Frenchies I’ve walked. Some have been much more into sniffing every single inch of the sidewalk while others have loved meeting new dogs and been overall very energetic. They are absolutely adorable and so far have never caused me any issues as a walker. I would say they appear to be very good apartment dogs, being rather small and not needing as much exercise as medium sized dogs without being a tiny breed. They are good snugglers and do love their sleep. They are usually up for a good game of some sort and are pretty food-motivated, making them rather trainable. I would recommend a French bulldog to city-dwellers as well as home-owners.

I've known about eight French Bulldogs in my lifetime, and almost universally their attitudes could be summed up with "a stranger is just a friend you haven't met." Champion, the most recent Frenchie I've walked, barked when he heard me unlocking the door, but the moment I stepped inside and he saw me, ran over gave me a skeptical sniff, then became the most enthusiastic new friend. He grabbed a toy in his mouth, but dropped it the moment he saw me pick up his harness. He was easy to leash, and started practically running out the door. Once outside he sniffed every plant he saw, and tried to "mark" most of them. At certain points, he would enthusiastically flop down on the ground and do a barrel roll, then spring back up and continue on with his journey. Most Frenchies treat walks like they're little explorers, wanting to be in front of you, and checking out every sight, sound, and smell on their way.

Wow they are one of my favorite breeds! They are just so spunky, and full of energy! It's easier to manage since they're so small! I love when they're so excited and start jumping and making these cute little faces! Even though they're small they played well with bigger dogs. I once witnessed a frenchie playing tug-o-war with a bigger dog and the bigger dog almost had him flying but he hung on! And was ready for more! They're also lap dogs! Once they exerted all of their energy they're ready to just lay on your lap! They're positive energy can really brighten up a day!

French Bulldogs are an adorable breed with large ears and even bigger hearts. These sweet little dogs are a great size for a lap dog, but have the spunk and energy of their larger relatives. The French Bulldog that I walked was a pampered little guy with a LOT of puppy energy. Even after a 30 minute walk and some running, this little guy was still rearing to play tug of war with some shoelaces and his leash. According to the owner he had been put in obedience school, but still didn’t listen very well to “no” or “off”. Other than that the walk was great. He was a little shy to poop in front of me, but eventually did. He also liked to walk close to walls, etc. in order to get as many smells in as possible, or when we were running he liked to grab the leash and pull himself. Adorable guys with lots of spunk!

LE FRENCHIE! French bulldogs are wonderful and magical creatures. I have walked many and they have a wide array of personality characteristics such as being affectionate, playful, keen, lively, patient, alert, athletic, sociable, right, and easygoing. Many dogs separately can have a few of these qualities but very few breeds have it all. French bulldogs are simply one of the best! Frenchies are affectionate, friendly dogs that were bred to be companions. Although they’re somewhat slow to be housebroken, they get along well with other dogs and aren’t big barkers. The dogs don’t need much exercise, so they are fine in small areas and enjoy the safety of a crate. Frenchies are very sensitive, so they do not take criticism lightly. If you scold a French bulldog, it might take it very seriously and mope around the house. French bulldogs respond better to positive reinforcement and encouragement. Frenchies are some of the most stubborn dogs I have walked, they seldom go anywhere they don’t like, are authoritative yet amiable, and often are open to numerous new adventures. They like to explore and all of them have a distinct personality that makes them unique and stick out. I have never met a Frenchie that I don’t find to be silly, bold, happy, tenacious, and sweetly stubborn! French bulldogs are the dogs that celebrities love the most. Celebrities like Hilary Duff, Lady Gaga, and Zach Braff have all been seen frolicking with their French bulldogs. Even Leonardo DiCaprio has one—aptly named Django. Hugh Jackman’s Frenchie is named Dali, after the way the dog’s mouth curls like the famous artist’s moustache. All in all, French bulldogs are one of the easiest and wonderful breed to be around. They are lively, jovial, expressive, emotional, and incredibly attuned to the ones around them.

I walked two Frenchies in the same home, one a puppy and one a bit older. The puppy was very stubborn and would not go outside on a leash. Instead she had to be carried down the stairs and to the grassy area. She moved at her own pace. She was often motivated by treats. The older puppy was ready to explore, but often would feel stubborn about waiting for the younger puppy.

This frenchie was a real treat to walk. He's such a friendly little puppy. He's still learning how to interact with his environment, but he'll get there. A lot of people here in the city have this breed because 1) they're great apartment dogs based on their size and that they don't need a ton of exercise, and 2) because they tend to be incredibly friendly with people, children, and other dogs. This little guy wanted to say hi to everyone, and everyone was more than happy to oblige

Super playful and spontaneous. Life’s to run around jump and explore. He doesn’t like to be left out of things and enjoys constant interaction so loves going to puppy daycare. Super stubborn! daily walks barely happens as he much prefers to run around in the garden than walk down the road. It is hard to avoid the jumping as they get excited the moment they’re in contact with humans. Loveable dogs and best companions for watching Tv and lazing around :)

Though we deemed her to be defective, she is the best. She is becoming better at a pace of her own. Loves to scavenge around and try everything. Needs a lot of one on one attention I’ve noticed in the first months. She loves to cuddle, and is slowly becoming a dominating bark in the neighborhood.
