Give a Wag! Gives to Columbia Shelters

There are a number of animal welfare organizations in place in Columbia dedicated to serving the pets and people of the Midlands of South Carolina and addressing the pet overpopulation issue. Of these, PETSinc and Pawmetto Lifeline operate nonprofit shelters to rescue homeless animals and adopt them into permanent, loving homes. Together, these organizations strive to minimize euthanasia of healthy, adoptable pets and provide resources to strengthen the local community.

PETSinc, a no-kill animal rescue organization, was established in 1991 to serve the abandoned, distressed, abused, and stray animals throughout the Midlands region of South Carolina. Founded by Patricia McQueen and Jane Brundage as a volunteer-operated nonprofit, the organization expanded their staff and facilities to accommodate the rising demand for homeless animal refuge. Today, PETSinc operates a 10,000-square foot adoption center where they care for about 100 homeless animals at a time and offer a variety of services for Columbia's pet owners. This nonprofit places more than 3,200 animals each year into responsible forever homes and temporary foster homes. In addition to animal rescue, fostering, and adoption, PETSinc provides a low-cost spay/neuter clinic, responsible pet ownership programs, behavior training, and community outreach targeted at engaging and empowering the local community.

Founded in 1999 as Project Pet, Pawmetto Lifeline is another vital animal rescue organization providing humane care for homeless pets and serving as the conscience of compassion for South Carolina's Midlands community. Since their founding, the nonprofit has dedicated their efforts to the achievement of a no-kill community and has rescued more than 25,000 animals from being euthanized. Pawmetto Lifeline is committed to building a better humanity through education and outreach, instilling their values of respect, compassion, justice, courage, and collaboration. They offer programs for pets and people through four distinct initiatives: adoption, rescue collaboration, medical care, and education.

Pawmetto Lifeline programs include low-cost spay/neuter and vaccine clinics, animal adoptions, a pet wellness program, educational sessions, a pet food bank, and more. They even collaborate with more than 175 rescue partners nationwide through their HEART program to help save pets scheduled for euthanasia. Their targeted approach embraces the animal-human bond to foster a healthier community where every pet has loving, permanent home.
