Found just to the south of San Francisco, Daly City enjoys easy access to one of the most dog-friendly cities in the world. Not only does this mean that there’s plenty for you and your dog to see and do in the area, but also that dogs in need in and around Daly City can always rely on a host of excellent animal welfare organizations and rescue groups!
Family Dog Rescue is one of those groups. Founded in 2010, Family Dog Rescue has saved more than 3,000 pets and paired them with their paw-fect humans to create loving families. Family Dog Rescue welcomes dogs of all sizes, breeds, and personalities, and its San Francisco shelter is open seven days a week by appointment only.
As a non-profit rescue group, Family Dog Rescue is 100 percent funded by donations. Financial support, volunteer help, and foster carers are always needed, so feel free to lend a helping paw if you can.
Wonder Dog Rescue has a similar commitment to helping unfortunate pooches that are down on their luck. The group specializes in rescuing all types of small dogs, helping canines from six weeks to 16 years of age find loving owners.
While those rescued pets are awaiting adoption, all are cared for in loving foster homes. This ensures that they receive the love, attention, and rehabilitation they need to enjoy a second chance at life. Just like Family Dog Rescue, Wonder Dog Rescue always welcomes donations and volunteers, both of which are essential to its canine lifesaving efforts.
Proud of your pet and all the joy and companionship she brings into your life? Grab your furry friend and head along to Pet Pride Day to celebrate all the best things about our canine companions! Hosted by San Francisco Animal Care & Control, Pet Pride Day is a tail-wagging festival that promises pet adoptions and a whole afternoon full of pet-friendly fun. You can enter your dog in a pet costume or trick contest, create something special at the dog and cat toy-making workshop, and shop the latest products from a range of pet vendors. You can even meet local rescue groups and wet your whistle in the beer and wine garden, so there’s plenty for guests of all ages to enjoy!
Pawtrero’s Dog Day Afternoon is San Francisco’s largest pet adoption street fair! Held each November on Brannan Street, this fun-filled celebration provides heaps of entertainment for two- and four-legged guests alike. While the adorable adoptables and paw-some local rescue groups in attendance are the highlights, there’s a whole lot more for you and your pet to see and do. There’s a pet costume contest, pet photography and caricatures, and vendors selling an extensive variety of pet products. And the best part of all? A whopping 100 percent of all proceeds from the fair go to the rescues in attendance.
Looking for a grrr-eat excuse to get outside and get active with your dog? SF Race for the Paws is paw-fect! Held in Crissy Field in February, this woof-tastic fundraiser centers around a 5K run and pet adoption event. Each year, hundreds of runners prepare to tackle the scenic 5K course, while there’s also a relaxed 1-mile walk if you prefer to take it easy. You’ll also get the chance to meet some canine cuties up for adoption, treat yourself at the doggie kissing booth, and rehydrate in the post-race beer garden. Funds raised throughout the event benefit Family Dog Rescue.
Come drink one down with your hound at Pints & Puppies, a lip-lickingly good fundraiser that benefits Family Dog Rescue. If you want to socialize with other dog lovers, enjoy a cheap drink or two, and have some fun with your furry friend, this is the event for you! Held at The Yard at Mission Rock, this family-friendly event is also open to kids of all ages and canine family members. With your pooch by your side, you can sample delicious craft beers, chat with other dog owners, and generally enjoy a relaxing night out. Best of all, a portion of the proceeds go to help Family Dog Rescue save the lives of dogs in need.
Because chocolate is toxic to dogs, it’s often difficult for your furry family member to join in all the fun at Easter. But at Wag Hotels’ annual Easter Egg Hunt for Dogs, your pooch will find himself right at the center of the action. While you enjoy finger foods and shop for some grrr-eat products from local vendors, your pooch can sniff out eggs filled with some deliciously tasty treats and wonderful prizes. Bring your camera to take advantage of photo opportunities with the Easter Bunny, and remember that dogs and kids under 12 get in free. Funds raised benefit Family Dog Rescue.
