Give a Wag! Gives to Freeport Shelters

The little coastal town of Freeport, Maine has an enormous heart for furry friends. From dogs and cats to birds and pigs, there are shelters and rescues based all around the bay area to serve and protect animals in need and thus the local community.

The primary shelter caring for and rehoming the stray, abandoned, and homeless dogs of Freeport is the Coastal Humane Society. The nonprofit charity organization, functioning as a shelter for animals in need and a companion animal adoption agency, was founded in 1950 by a group of citizens concerned about the welfare of the area's homeless animals. The Coastal Humane Society serves the animals and people of several towns along Maine's mid-coast, helping more than 3,000 stray, abandoned, or abused companion animals every year.

The shelter's staff of 20 along with a strong network of more than 100 volunteers work together to provide services including animal care and shelter, adoption,  pet owner resources, rabies and microchip clinics, and animal welfare advocacy. Every animal that comes through their doors is spayed/neutered, vaccinated, medically and behaviorally assessed, and treated as needed by the shelter's veterinarian.

The Coastal Humane Society truly believes in the special bond between animals and their humans. It is much more than just owning a pet, but rather having a relationship with a loving companion, a loyal best friend. Together with their volunteers and the local community, the organization strives to enhance the animal-human bond, educate and advocate animal welfare, protect and save animals' lives, provide exemplary shelter and care, and find every adoptable animal a loving forever home.
