Located less than 10 miles west of downtown Houston, Hunters Creek Village enjoys easy access to the best, dog-friendly activities that Texas’ most populous city has to offer. And with such a large community of dog lovers calling the area home, there’s also no shortage of animal welfare and rescue groups dedicated to helping animals in need.
Houston SPCA is one of those groups. Houston’s first and largest animal protection organization, the group helps more than 50,000 animals each and every year!
Founded in 1924 Houston SPCA is on a mission to promote commitment to and respect for all animals and free them from suffering, abuse, and exploitation. To do this it provides care and shelter to abandoned and injured animals, investigates cases of animal cruelty, adopts pets throughout the local area, and runs a range of community outreach programs to help educate the public about animal welfare.
However, Houston SPCA doesn’t receive any government funding, nor is it associated with any other SPCA. As a result, it relies on donations, grants, and the support of Houston’s animal lovers to continue its excellent work.
Rescued Pets Movement is another Houston organization dedicated to helping those pets that need it most. This non-profit specializes in rehabilitating homeless dogs and cats and then transporting them to their forever homes in communities throughout the United States and Canada.
Since 2013, this paw-some organization has saved the lives of more than 22,000 companion animals! That’s an impressive number that grows every week, so why not consider donating or volunteering to help this figure rise even further?
If you’re looking for a grrr-eat excuse to get outside and get some exercise with your furry friend, this is it! Held in November at Memorial Park, iWalk for Animals is a highly anticipated annual fundraiser that supports the Houston SPCA’s lifesaving programs and services. You and your pooch can get together with stacks of other dog lovers and pets to tackle your choice of the 5K Canine Caper or 1K Pup Strut. The scenic course takes in Memorial Park’s Picnic Loop, while the day also features exciting demonstrations, live music, heaps of paw-some pet-related contests, and a variety of vendors. So fetch your sneakers, fetch your dog, and get ready for some fun!
Do you enjoy nothing more than getting your canine companion dressed up in cute, cuddly, and downright adorable costumes? Does your pup thrive on the extra attention that comes with getting dressed up? If so, you and your pooch will love this Dog Halloween Contest, hosted by Eight Row Flint and Rescued Pets Movement! There are some woof-tastic prizes on offer for the best-dressed canines, but the real fun of this event is simply in watching a host of adorable dogs strut their stuff across the Eight Row Patio. If your dog wants to compete, all you’ll need to do is take along some pet food to be donated to Rescued Pets Movement!

This paw-some event, which has been running for more than 35 years, gives you and your pooch a chance to mingle with other dog lovers and raise your pulse rate for a very good cause. The emphasis at this run is definitely on “fun”, with heaps of entertainment and activities for you and your pet to enjoy.
