If a dog in Lauderdale is ever abandoned, abused, or in need of help, there is always an animal rescue group of welfare organization ready to step in. Because Lauderdale is part of the Minneapolis-St Paul metropolitan area, it is well served by a host of passionate animal protectors.
Animal Humane Society is a well-known organization that has been helping animals and championing their welfare since 1878. With an open-admission policy that means it doesn’t discriminate against unwanted animals on the basis of health, age, breed, or behaviour, the society helps more than 23,000 pets in need each year!
As part of its vision to compassionately and responsibly create a more humane world for animals, Animal Humane Society also runs education, outreach, and advocacy programs to increase awareness of animal welfare in the wider community. However, as an independent non-profit that is not affiliated with or funded by any other national group, and which doesn’t receive any government funding, it relies on community support to keep saving the lives of our furry friends.
Safe Hands Rescue is another non-profit that works to protect dogs and cats in and around Minneapolis. With a mission to create a world where all companion animals are loved, respected and have a home, this group is entirely staffed by volunteers. It also doesn’t have a shelter, so all of the pets it rescues are cared for in loving and nurturing foster homes.
Once again, generous support from the community is critical to the success of Safe Hands’ rescue efforts, so feel free to donate funds or volunteer your time if you can.
Each July, the Northeast Minneapolis Riverfront District goes to the dogs as part of the NE Dog Parade! This eagerly-anticipated event sees dogs of all shapes and sizes get together with their humans for a relaxing stroll through the streets of Northeast. There are wet noses, wagging tails, plenty of opportunities to socialize, and heaps of games and activities for everyone to enjoy. The highlights are the adorable pet costume contest and best pet trick contest, so it’s time to start working on your pet’s costume and ramping up your daily training sessions to make sure you and your pooch are ready to go!
Grab your pooch, slip into your shoes, and take a walk to support animals in need. Fast and the Furry is a 5K run/walk and 8K run to benefit People & Pets Together, a Minneapolis-based organization that helps prevent owners surrendering beloved pets because they can’t afford to care for them. Held at Harriet Island, this dog-friendly festival sees owners and their canine companions work up a sweat and meet plenty of other like-minded animal lovers along the way! There’s even a free pet expo where you can shop the latest and greatest pet products and treat your fur-kid to a tasty treat or three. It’s a mutts-do day out for dogs and their humans, so add it to your diary for next year!
