Rainbow Animal Rescue is one of the smaller, canine-only shelters in the Norfolk area. What they lack in shelter space, they surely make up for in dedication and hard work, as they are an entirely volunteer-based organization. Their fights against unnecessary euthanasia and irresponsible pet ownership are apparent to all those who pay them a visit. Rainbow Animal Rescue maintains several national partnerships with organizations dedicated to these fights and is always looking for more volunteers to join their team.
The Norfolk SPCA is actually one of the oldest animal shelters in the entire country, established in the 1800s! With an intake of about 1,000 animals and 950 adoptions each year, they certainly have their hands full. That said, it is one of the few no-kill shelters contracted by the government, offering a number of various services to the community such as the Senior Dogs for Senior Citizens project, a pet pantry, and limited veterinary services. This shelter has been at it for decades and decades, and is showing no signs of slowing down!
