If ever there was a city more aptly named than Oceanside, we haven't yet heard of it. This town, which juts up against the Pacific Ocean, is the typical, sunny, California image you'd conjure up in your head. But while you're picturing sandy beaches, and salty waves, make sure you leave room for a bunch of pups, because Oceanside is progressively becoming more and more dog-friendly. Though it's not in line with some of Cali's other big-name, pooch-tastic cities yet (we're looking at you, San Francisco), it's grown quite a bit in the past few years. Now, restaurants and bars are moving towards allowing doggos, and shelters in the area are hosting pup events that are fun for you and your pooch to attend!
One of the largest shelters serving Oceanside is the San Diego Humane Society. Located a few miles away, this shelter has been serving San Diego County since 1880, making it the oldest non-profit organization in the county! It has campuses in Escondido, Oceanside, and San Diego. The shelter offers hundreds of programs, takes in abandoned and homeless animals, provides foster programs, and aims to find forever homes for the pooches in its care.
Another big organization in the Oceanside area is the Last Chance at Life Organization. This all-breed dog organization is focused on helping animals in San Diego County, with a majority of their pets being cared for in foster homes. However, pets that are awaiting medical recovery or have special needs are housed at a small shelter in Oceanside. All pets in the care of Last Chance at Life get the best medical care possible from the doctors at Mission Animal and Bird Hospital!
