Angels of Assisi is the biggest private shelter and low-cost clinic in Roanoke and is constantly challenging traditional expectations for what an animal shelter should and should not be. Their clinic offers discounted services ranging from medical imaging to dentition. This shelter is intimately engaged with the community and firmly believes that their services drastically reduce rates of surrender. Programs like Guardian Angel, which provides refuge to pets of domestic violence victims, or Pets for Patriots, which offers discounted adoptions to veterans, are what makes Angels of Assisi so widely loved. Operating from a massive 200 acre animal sanctuary, they have aided in the rehoming of thousands of animals since they opened their doors.
The official shelter for the valley of Roanoke, the Regional Center for Care and Protection receives over 5000 animals each year. Being that they see so many animals each year in their limited capacity, RCACP works closely with the local organizations to ensure that as many adoptable animals find their forever homes as possible. While their main objective is the return of lost pets, RCACP are also responsible for all pet licensing and responding to instances of disaster and neglect.
Working closely with both Angels of Assisi and RCACP, the Roanoke Valley SPCA strives towards a community without homeless pets. They offer low-cost microchip, neuter, and spay services. When they are hosting educational events at public schools during the academic year, they put on summer science camps full of activities to keep the kids busy. RVSPCA does not just cater their programs to youth, they also provide the elderly with pet food for their pooches through Meals on Wheels. Because of their robust community program list, they are always looking for more volunteer power!
