Give a Wag! Gives to Tybee Island Shelters

Tybee Island is a barrier island and small city near Savannah, Georgia. Known for sandy beaches, Fort Screven (with its 19th-century concrete gun batteries) and the Tybee Island Light Station and Museum. The nearest animal rescue and shelter is the Humane Society for Greater Savannah, located eighteen miles away.

The mission of Humane Society for Greater Savannah is "to better the lives of pets and people". This organization was founded 55 years ago when a group of concerned animal lovers formed the Humane Society of Chatham-Savannah, Inc. In 1985, the group became a non-profit and changed the name to the Humane Society of Greater Savannah. In 2016, the organization accepted 171 dogs from the local Chatham Animal Services, worked with 97 dogs with behavioral issues through their Pet Fix Savannah Program, and placed 238 puppies and kittens in homes.

Eighty children were reading buddies to the story-loving strays through the Nuzzle Buddies Reading Program. A total of 4461 spay and neuter surgeries were performed, helping to prevent more homeless animals. Big dogs can be hard to place, but this organization found fur-ever homes for 633 large dogs!

The Pet Fix Savannah program provides low-cost veterinary services to the community that include vaccinations,  microchipping, and basic medical services. There are a range of prevention services that include a pet pantry, a pet helpline with behavioral consults, a return-to-owner program, and temporary emergency boarding. A weekly column in the Savannah Morning News informs readers on all kinds of tips for being a better dog owner with topics such as training, pet resolutions, bite prevention, safety, and hurricane preparations.
