Hi, my name is Melissa. I have been an animal lover and owner my whole life. I had an elderly beagle named Tommy, and one of my favorite bonding experiences with him was taking him out to enjoy the outdoors. I was using positive training to enhance our walking experience and his quality of life. I've never met a dog I didn't like, and I can't wait to meet your canine companion!

Dog Boarding in Portland

Safe Haven Humane Society caters to Portland MI and the surrounding towns and cities. This organization came into existence when the community was facing issues with animal control and abundant euthanization. Since then, they have placed about 1,200 pets into their forever homes.

They are a non-profit and all volunteer based rescue and have no physical location because they only place their animals in foster homes. Their dogs and cats are generally rescued from other local animal shelters that are at risk of euthanization. SHHS is committed to educating the public and the community about the overpopulation of cats and dogs and the importance of spaying and neutering pets. They often host special fundraisers and events that help support and take care of their rescue animals. They like to host t-shirt fundraisers, blocktail parties for humans and dogs, adoption days, and educational classes.

Slightly outside of Portland, MI is Mackenzie's Animal Sanctuary. It is the Midwest's largest no-kill shelter/sanctuary. It was established in 1999 after the Azzar family lost their precious family pup, Mackenzie.

They are committed to taking in abandoned dogs and giving them a safe, loving, and healthy environment to thrive in before they find their new families. They believe proper education about animals and how to take care of them is essential to overpopulation as well. Therefore, they host adult and youth educational programs at the sanctuary. They also put on a ton of events throughout the year like open houses to their amazing facility, fall festivals, and special fundraisers.
