Dog parks and other pet-friendly areas aren’t abundant in Acton, but dog owners don’t have to travel far to find such places. Take the MayDOG Park, for example. Located in Maynard, Massachusetts, MayDOG Park is just 3.7 miles away from Acton, and it is well-worth every block. MayDOG Park has no admission fee, is open as long as the sun’s up, is completely fenced in, and has a water station for dogs and their owners. Your dog will love running leash-free with the new friends he’ll meet, and you’ll have just as much fun watching him!

Now, we’re off to Concord, Massachusetts, which is a whopping 4.6 miles away from Acton and is home to the Reformatory Branch Trail. The Reformatory Branch Trail was designed by the Rails-to-Trails Conservancy, which turns old railways into usable community trails. Bikers, joggers, skaters, and dog-walkers are welcome on this trail, but dogs must leashed, well-behaved, and cleaned up after at all times.

This next destination is a little different from the ones above, but it’s a great family opportunity. Located 6.6 miles away from Acton in the city of Westford, Massachusetts, the Drew Farm Home is a pick-your-own apple orchard that has Red and Golden Delicious, Cortland, and Empire apples, just to name a few. Free tractor rides are offered to enhance your day at the orchard, Leashed pets are more than welcome, but a waste bag must be shown to a worker before your dog can enter. It’s an apple orchard, you know, and no one wants stinky apples!

Acton is a densely packed town nestled close to others in the region. North Acton is a peaceful, lower populated area full of green spaces. One of the best treats for good dogs in North Acton is a trip to NARA Park. NARA (Nathaniel Allen Recreation Area) is a large, multi-use park with many areas for play and walking. Your pup can enjoy leashed walks around the many NARA walking trails. Access to other portions of the park, from the beach to special events, can vary. Even without extras, NARA is a great place to visit in North Acton.

Acton’s main street area is wedged between two beautiful places to take your dogs. The first is the Acton Arboretum. If you’re up for a stately, leashed walk through labeled and cultivated gardens, this is the place for you. There’s lots of great smells to smell and trails to walk. If you’re looking for room to roam, check out Grassy Pond Conservation Area instead. This large area of land contains over four miles of hiking trails. Dogs are welcome to be off leash if they are well behaved and within your control, but the park is not fenced. Shy pups and free spirits should be leashed for safety.

Kelly Corner is home to the Great Hill Recreation Area. The simple 1.8 mile loop trail is popular with walkers and joggers--and dogs think it’s up to sniff too! The Great Hill Recreation Area offers preserved woodlands of historical significance. Talk a walk and discover what the land looked like before Acton became a thriving town all around it. Though densely populated compared to other areas of Acton, Kelly Corner is close to many other neighborhoods, parks, and attractions. Head to North Acton (a ten minute drive) for NARA Park or Town Center for a bite with man’s best friend.

Town Center is a great place in Acton for a romp through the park followed by a bite to eat. Start your outing with vigorous exercise in one of two dog friendly parks in Town Center. Wetherbee Land and Pratts Brook Conservation Area are two great places to let your dog run. Your controlled dog is welcome on the hiking trails and through the park area. If your dog needs a refresher on off-leash manners, keeping them close to your side may be best unless the trails are empty. Then head deeper into Town Center for outdoor lunch at dog friendly Atlantic Sea Grill!

West Acton is the place to go for leashed walking trails and plenty of fun. This packed area has four parks where dogs are allowed on leash. Some, like Woods on Mass Ave, allow controlled dogs off leash as long as they don’t prove a nuisance. Hitting the parks at off-peak hours is the best way to improve your pup’s manners off the leash. That way you can come back with a full picnic and not have to worry about clipping or unclipping them as the crowds allow. The wide variety of parks means touring West Acton will never get old.
