As the oldest town in Dallas County, Adel was first known as Penoach. By 1849, its named had changed to Adel. Later in 1870, a railroad was built that connected Adel to the rest of the country. Abandoned in 1952, the railroad line was repurposed, and is now enjoyed as the Raccoon River Valley Trail. This trail travels throughout the state offering long-distance hiking for people visiting the county and their furry family members.

The Island Park and Campground located along the Raccoon River features land for hosting tents or RVs, and has lots of amenities for you. As a pet friendly place to stay, it offers lots of room for your pup to romp!

Created from the former Aquatic Park, Adel now features a fun dog park where you can socialize with other pups and their owners. The family-friendly neighborhoods also feature local parks where you and your pooch will have a furtastic good time playing fetch or just enjoying nature.

Getting some fresh air and taking a walk with Fido is a great way to explore the town of Adel. The Raccoon River Valley Trail can be accessed in several locations in the city and the path is flat and easy to travel.  There is a $10 per year permit fee for using the trail which can be obtained online. About a mile south of the center of Adel inside the Aquatic Center, you will find Adel’s only dog park, named simply Adel Dog Park. Two acres of land was developed here to welcome pups of all sizes, including separate areas for large and small pups. There are obstacles for your pooch to play on, and a waste station to clean up.

Taking some time to investigate the north side of Adel is perfect when walking your pup to Kinnick Feller Riverside Park. As Adel’s oldest park, if offers 23 acres of open field that are perfect for running and romping in the grass, or playing a game of fetch. Whether you are planning to take Fido for a walk along the trails or let him tag along while you play a game of disc golf, Evans Park in the Adel neighborhood provides a perfect place to work off some energy. The park is 12-acres of land with plenty of open space for your pup to have a tail wagging good time with his furry pals. About 9 miles south of Adel, dog lovers can visit Trindle Park in the Van Meter neighborhood in the town of the same name. As part of the Dallas County Conservation Board, the 24.5 acres feature beautiful open spaces perfect for a romp through the grass with your pup. There are two open shelters where you and Fido’s pals can celebrate his birthday, or just meet up with friends and their four-legged children. The restrooms are open from May through October where you can fill up your water bottles and relax after an energetic game of fetch with Fido’s favorite toy.

Only eleven minutes north of Adel is the Brenton Arboretum in the small town of Dallas Center. This 141 acre public garden inspires peace and tranquility, and is a welcome respite from the hub bub of daily life. The garden also welcomes your dog to explore its many paths and trails filled with beautiful trees and flowers. This gorgeous outdoor space offers seven walking trails that your leashed pup can sniff to his heart’s content. There is no fee for humans, but the Arboretum does charge a small fee for a day pass for your dog.
