Residents of Airway Heights, WA get the best of both worlds -- a quiet, community-oriented, small-town experience just nine miles away from all the big city amenities of Spokane. The town is named for its proximity to the runways of Spokane Airport and Fairchild Airforce Base, not its geography. It’s located on the northeastern corner of the mostly flat Columbian Plateau -- but don’t worry, you and your pooch can still find plenty of pawesome hiking trails to sniff and explore not too far away! Airway Heights might be a small town, but there’s certainly room for a veterinary clinic to take good care of your furry friend, and you’ll find 24-hour emergency services available in Spokane.

There’s no designated dog park in Airway Heights, but that doesn’t mean you and your best friend are bound to be bored! The town has a couple of community parks for on-leash exercise. Make no bones about it -- a visit to Dog Delicious on Sprague Avenue is sure to get your dog drooling! This one-of-a-kind dog cafe serves up full meals for your pooch, and guarantees that every dish is made with human-quality ingredients. The liver stew and "mutt-loaf" are particularly pawpular with doggy diners! The staff also make made-to-order cakes for special occasions like birthdays or "gotcha" days. Afterwards, you two can enjoy a leashed, after-dinner stroll in Riverfront Park. Walk all the way up to the falls, if you can -- the view from the bridge is really something special. Make no bones about it -- your pooch will love a trip to the South Hill Dog Park! While this off-leash area isn’t quite as big as the Spokanimal Dog Park, it also has plenty of trails for your pup to investigate, and wide open spaces ideal for enthusiastic games of catch. Bags, water and toys are provided, but there’s no separate area for small dogs, so be mindful of your pup’s temperament. Riverside State Park is a pawfect place for you and your furry friend to get back to nature! Located just ten miles from Airway Heights, the park itself showcases some of the most splendid scenery this part of the country has to offer, and there are some really interesting sculptures dotted around the preserve. It’s also home to the famous Centennial Trail, a 40-mile trek that runs from the Nine Mile Falls in the park all the way to the Idaho border. Your pooch is welcome as long as they’re leashed, but watch out for wildlife!

If you and your pup love hiking, you’d need to be barking mad not to check out the Fish Lake Trail! This furrific hiking route only has a moderate incline, so it’s suitable for everyone from the fittest furry friends to the less athletic among us, and runs for nine miles through scenic woodland and pretty wildflower meadows. It’s extra special in fall, when the trees along the route burst into a blaze of color. Your pooch will have to be leashed, of course, and keep an eye out for cyclists along the way!
