Arverne is located in Queens, New York,  on the east central section of the Rockaway Peninsula.  This area has both residential and commercial areas and housing developments with private shared grounds. There are lots of industrial and commercial areas along major arteries in this neighborhood. Locals can access area shopping centers, restaurants, and a variety of services and business, although residential and commercial areas tend to be separated, and accessibility on foot will depend on where you are located in the neighborhood.
Enjoying the beach and residential areas on warm summer days with a stroll, accompanied by Fido, is a favorite pastime for locals and visitors to the area. Cool ocean breezes in the summer make weather on the peninsula more moderate during hot, humid, New York summers. Weather on the peninsula can be extreme at other times of the year, when disturbances from the Atlantic blow in. Storms in the fall and winter can cause locals and their pups to take shelter inside! Winter can be quite cool, and warm waterproof gear may be required for walking in Arverne in the offseason.

Arverne is uniquely situated on a peninsula, with Jamaica Bay on the north and the open Atlantic Ocean on the south of the community. The Rockaway Beach runs along the southern border of Arverne, and the Rockaway Beach Boardwalk runs along the beach. The area has lots of private residences and single-family homes, but also some housing developments with shared properties. There are several major roadways with commercial areas in Arverne, including the Rockaway Beach Boulevard which runs through the middle of the community. This major thoroughfare has lots of vehicle traffic and limited crossing points for pedestrians. Be careful around commercial areas with busy arteries. Keep your dog leashed, watch for traffic and stay at designated crosswalks when navigating busy streets. While many residential neighborhoods have sidewalks and housing complexes have walkways, there are also many areas with roads lacking pedestrian right of ways. Some of these border natural areas which may be desirable locations for walking your dog, so be careful of traffic in these areas and keep your dog on the curb side when walking along roadways without sidewalks.

Rockaway Beach is located along the south side of Arverne, and the Rockaway Beach Boardwalk runs alongside it, providing a beachfront greenway for those wanting to enjoy the sights and sounds of the ocean and beach. However, dogs are not allowed on the beach and boardwalk during the summer. They are allowed access from Labor Day to Memorial Day in the offseason, and only on a leash.

There are also two fenced wildlife preserves in Arverne, Dubos Point Wildlife Sanctuary and Brandt Point Wildlife Sanctuary. Both are restricted from public access, however, surrounding roadways can be accessed on walks with your dog so you can enjoy the coastal scenery and the wildlife in the area, without disturbing the local flora and fauna.

If you take Beach Channel Drive west to the adjacent community of Hammels you can take your dog to the Freeway Dog Run. This highly rated dog run has separate fenced areas for large and small dogs, and the large dog run has lots of space for big dogs to really romp. There is seating and shade, and facilities to clean up after your dog. Parking is somewhat limited in the area, so plan ahead and consider bringing bug repellant; wetlands in the area contribute to mosquitos in the area.
