Ranked as having the sixth-best beach in 2008, Asbury Park is a lush coastal town full of dog-friendly beaches, parks, and trails in New Jersey. Although not a park itself, Ashbury Park was established as a city in 1897. Over 100 years later in 2009, Asbury Park announced their first dog-friendly beach to the delight of its resident pooches!

The 8th Ave Dog Beach has become a huge tourist attraction for humans looking for a fun day out with their pooch. The beach is dog-friendly to off-leash pups all day in the offseason of November thru April. While in season, pups can run off leash only after 6 PM to 8:30 AM. The beach has plenty of clean-up stations and doggy water fountains.

Travel inward from the coast and you'll find The Wonder Bar and their dog-friendly outdoor play area, which fills with over 300 dogs during its Yappy Hour event every week. Humans can enjoy some excellent wine tasting and pup grub while their dog gets to enjoy the socialization and free area to roam around off leash safely.

The town has five different animal hospitals, and with other activities like the Asbury Park boardwalk and the Twisted Tree Cafe, there are more than enough options to keep you and your pooch entertained.

Sunset Lake Park, Bradley Park, and Firefighters Park in the City Center neighborhood of Asbury Park are a string of parks that line up to make about 1.2 miles of walking trails. The parks have lush green scenery and plenty of trees for shade, open fields to run around in with your leashed dog, and Sunset Lake right in the center. It's a puptastic option for a walk. Sunset Lake has an open pier 24/7 and allows leashed-dogs onto the dock to accompany humans in fishing, or going out to the lake by kayak or boat. Dogs must remain on a 6-foot leash while in the lake.

With plenty of roaming space for you and your dog to play fetch or frisbee, the park also features benches and a clean-up station near the parking area. After getting all that energy out at the Springwood Park, head over to The Speakeatery, a dog-friendly gourmet deli with outdoor seating and complimentary water for dogs, and delicious sandwiches for humans.

Dogs Corner is at the edge of Asbury Park and provides an entrance into the Whale Pond Brook Preserve, a 90-acre natural area with plenty of dog-friendly walking trails. The walking trails allow dogs as long they remain on a leash and can handle being around the many wildlife species throughout the preserve. With over 3 miles of walking trails, the preserve is the perfect natural experience away from the beach. Since this is a natural preserve, there are only trash bins available, and humans will have to bring clean-up bags and water for the trip.

The small town of Oceanport is about 7 miles away from Asbury Park, and is a great place to head to for the Wolf Hill Dog Park. The 4-acre fenced-in park is usually quiet and not overcrowded, and features a separate area for dogs 35 pounds and under, and another for larger dogs. Both areas offer clean-up stations and trash bins. The in-park pavilion provides shade, and there are portapotties on site, but owners will have to remember to bring water for their soon to be thirsty pups.

A fenced-in dog area, trails, and a dog-friendly lake is at the Thompson Dog Park in Lincroft, a small town about 13 miles from Asbury Park. The large park has separate fenced-in areas for smaller and larger dogs to roam off-leash, complete with benches, clean-up stations, and water fountains. Each area has a double-gated entrance. Dogs must remain on a leash outside the fenced-in area, but are free to roam the natural trails throughout the park or play in the dog-friendly lake in the park if you want to get out and have some quiet one-on-one time with your pup.
