Austin Woods is a small suburban neighborhood located northwest of downtown. It is walking distance to a number of commercial shops, including a grocery store, pharmacy, and local foodie favorites, Torchy's Tacos and Galaxy Cafe. The neighborhood is most well-known for its concentration of public schools, making it ideal for families.

Close to Capital of Texas Highway, Austin Woods finds itself in the middle of the Texas Hill Country, surrounded by a number of nature preserves and beautiful scenery. Within the neighborhood itself, however, you and your furry companion will mainly be walking residential neighborhoods. Sidewalks, unfortunately, are sparse within this area. If you choose to walk here, be sure to stay aware, keep your dog on a short leash, and practice safe pedestrian protocol.

Main streets, such as Mesa Drive, Cima Serena Drive, and Tallwood Drive all offer sidewalks as well as plentiful crosswalks. These box in the local elementary and high schools, which contains Hill School Park and the only trail known in Austin Woods.

The main entrance to the Hill School Park trail is up a series of concrete steps, which your dog could find difficult if they're a senior or recovering from an injury. The terrain of the trail is flat and covered in gravel so it makes for an easy and quick walk.

The terrain of Austin Woods, in general, is mostly flat. No hiking boots or outdoorsmanship should be required for a leisurely walk in this neighborhood. An older region of the Austin area, the occasional crack in sidewalk is possible, and as mentioned, many portions of Austin Woods have little to no sidewalks.

Hill School Park trail is a simple, non-demanding loop around the school's open, partially shaded lot. It winds through the playground of Hill Elementary School, so be sure your dog is not reactive and is safe to be around children or avoid common recess hours. Surrounded by moderately busy streets, you may never quite escape the sound or a car or two and once school is dismissed, the streets will be crowded with harried moms and dads attempting to round up their children.

If interested in any nearby greenways, just outside the reach of Austin Woods, load up your pet in the car and drive a short distance in almost any direction. Steck Valley Greenbelt is just a 4-minute drive away from central Austin Woods neighborhood. Stillhouse Hollow Nature Preserve and Barrow Nature Preserve are just a little further if a 10-minute drive is okay for you and Fido.
