Avalon, New Jersey is a resort community that is home to some of the most expensive real estate on the East Coast. The population averages out at about 1,500, but can swell well over that during the summer months when tourism is at its peak.
The borough on Seven Mile Island is one of the most affluent communities in the area and is part of the Ocean City Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town has its own motto, “Cooler by a Mile,” which refers to its position a mile farther out into the Atlantic Ocean than the other barrier islands nearby. It is also considered one of the best beaches in New Jersey by both residents and travelers. The beach is dog-friendly, but leashes are required.
There are no animal hospitals in the city, but there are a few in neighboring towns as you drive away from the shore toward Cape May County. There are four pet-friendly restaurants in Avalon. Kudos American Grill is a very popular spot for dog lovers to take their pup for a sit-down meal in the middle of the day or after a full day at the beach. You will find the Cape May Wetlands are just minutes from the south side of town and offer more adventurous hikers the opportunity to explore with their dogs.
