The Avenue of the Arts is a designated cultural district, located centrally in Philadelphia against a section of Broad Street. This district contains cultural institutions such as the city’s theatre district, Philadelphia International Records offices, and retail space. The Pennsylvania Theatre of Fine Arts and the Clef Club of Jazz and Performing Arts are also located here and many students live in and walk to their respective schools. The designation of 'Avenue of the Arts North' refers to the extension of this district north of city hall to the Cecil B. Moore neighborhood.

The climate in Philly makes walking a weather-dependent activity with hot, humid summers and colder winters which may produce major snowstorms in some years with only light snow in others. Be prepared for whatever the weather in Philadelphia throws at you and if you walk your dog daily, make sure you have warm outerwear and footwear in winter.

The core of the Arts District contains high rise buildings with commercial space at street level and residences located on upper floors. This area is highly urban and built-up with little sunlight reaching the street level and artificial canyons created by tall buildings. The Avenue of the Arts North contains the performing arts schools, museums, and lower rise apartments.

This area is still highly developed and lacks natural landscaping. It is flat and easy to walk around with no steep climbs. Parking lots, public transportation, and busy thoroughfares with traffic accessing theatres, museums, and schools can pose a hazard when walking your dog in the region. Be sure to keep your dog leashed and close to you as sidewalks run along roadways with no grassy berms. This highly urban environment may take some getting used to for an older dog, so be sure to acclimate your pup by getting them used to the noise and traffic at less busy hours.

If you're looking for a doggy oasis in the Avenue of the Arts North, the Green Street Dog Park is nearby. This enclosed off-leash park has separate areas for large and small dogs. The surface is antimicrobial turf and there are waste facilities and water for drinking and washing your pup as well. The dog park is lighted for night use and there is a security system in place. Trees and benches make this a great place to relax and give local dog owners a chance to visit while their dogs make new friends too.

Love Park is also located in the area and is also known as John F. Kennedy Plaza. This paved plaza has curved granite steps, a fountain, trees, and seating areas. There is also a welcome center located here. This is a great place to sit and people-watch with your dog in the shade while enjoying a snack from a local food vendor.
