Located about 10 minutes west of Bellefontaine Neighbors is Western St. Louis, which is home to Wayside Dog Park. This fenced-in, off-leash dog park has plenty of room for you and your dog to run around and play; if you just want somewhere to relax with your pooch, there’s also several trees to shade you from the sun while you enjoy the outdoors! There are two separate sections of the park; one for larger dogs, and another for smaller, more-reserved dogs. While a leash is not required within the park, each dog owner must have one in their possession for each dog they have with them.
About 25 minutes south of Bellefontaine Neighbors is University City, where you’ll find University City Off-Leash Dog Park. This dog park features separate areas for small and large dogs, alongside plenty of amenities, including water fountains, pools for your pooch, and agility equipment. There’s also plenty of shade and seating for pup parents! You can also get in your exercise at the park; there are mini-walking trails located within the dog park. There is one catch, though: to use this dog park, you must have a membership. Both residents and non-residents are encouraged to contact city hall for more information.
Duchesne Park, located in Western Florrisant, about 15 minutes from Bellefontaine Neighbors, is home to Florissant Dog Park. Although this dog park is small, it is a fenced-in and off-leash option for local dog owners. There are separate areas for small and large dogs. Once you’re done at the dog park, head out to explore the rest of Duchesne Park! Fido can join you in the main areas of the park, but a leash is required for him to explore those sections. Remember to bring baggies to pick up any accidents, as well, as the park does not provide them.
Even your pup would like a treat on the hottest dog days of summer, so why not travel 15 minutes north to Florissant and enjoy some frozen custard? Fritz’s Frozen Custard is a dog-friendly dive where both you and your four-legged friend can enjoy a sweet treat; if you ask for a “doggy cone” your server will give you one at no charge. All seating is outdoor, so keep this in mind if it looks like it might start raining. A leash is required for Fido to join you at your table, so grab a leash and go for the treat that can’t be beat!
All dogs love a good walk, and your pooch will be howling in appreciation if you take him on a walk at Old Chain of Rocks Bridge in Northeast St. Louis, about 20 minutes from Bellefontaine Neighbors. Hey, you might even enjoy it, too! This mile-long converted railway actually bridges – pun intended – two states together. While your dog will enjoy the exercise, you’re likely to enjoy the view, so make sure to bring along your camera. Locals advise that it can get quite windy, so it’d be smart to bring along a sweater or jacket. A leash is required for Fido to join you on the trail.
