Berkeley is a city full of pet lovers – just open a history book for the proof. In 1979, the first dog park in the United States opened in Berkeley. Originally called the “Experimental Dog Park,” today the Martha Scott Benedict Memorial Park is still unique from other dog parks across the country.
Instead of being a dog run in a separate park, this park is truly a full-size park that includes dogs. There are tons of amenities for owners, like benches and shade pavilions. The dog park also has unique quiet hours, in the early morning and late at night, that help make the space agreeable to those in the nearby neighborhood while still providing excellent opportunities for owners to take their pets off-leash. In addition, the local Cesar Chavez Park has an off-leash dog run.
Berkeley has unique rules that permit dogs being off-leash in undeveloped areas, if the owners carry a leash, and the dogs are under voice control. The Tilden Regional Park is one of the best local areas for off-leash play, as it covers almost 2,000 acres of beautiful forest and lakes. Dogs are even allowed to play on the beaches in non-swim areas. For an extra special adventure, take your on-leash dog to ride the miniature train located in the park!
Berkeley Hills is a scenic and charming residential district conveniently located just north of the UC Berkeley campus. Home to students, staff and working professionals alike, the suburban feel includes numerous yards, small parks and even doggie waste stations; a handy find when you manage to leave the house without Fido’s doggie bags! For a change of scenery, head up to Indian Rock Park. You’ll find sprawling meadows and even a few short hiking trails, perfect for working in that morning exercise for both you and your pooch. Just a touch south, the Berkeley Rose Gardens and Berryman Reservoir are a great spot for an on-leash romp, or just stopping to smell the plentiful flowers while you and your dog get out and get socialized.
The Cragmont neighborhood of Berkeley, California is the perfect spot to park if both you and your canine companion need to get away from the hustle and bustle at the end of a long, hard work day. Conveniently located near downtown, the University and more, Cragmont is also known for its wide array of hiking and outdoor activities. Grab Fido’s collar and leash and head out to Cragmont Rock Park where well-mannered and on-leash dogs are always welcome. Miles of hiking and scenic trails will have you forgetting just how close you are to the busy bay area shopping and dining. After your trek, cool your paws at one of the numerous scenic meadows. Bring a pack full of canine and human treats and turn a quick jaunt into a day adventure to remember for both you and your pooch.
Hello! My name is Cloe, and I am an avid dog lover. I have had four lovable pooches growing up, and my current dog is a cute little spaniel-pomeranian mix named Mandy. I have had dogs my entire life, and have been caring for them ever since I can remember. In addition, I did several summer camps as a child and early teen where I learned about proper animal care and helped out with animals at my local humane society. i have had dogs ranging from a little jack russel terrier puppy to a big yellow lab, so I am comfortable with dogs of all sizes. i even used to walk my two big dogs at the same time, so I am comfortable handling the big guys. I can't wait to meet you and your pup!
Hi, I'm Nick! I grew up with a Bichon Frise named Chubba, and have taken care of many family and friends' dogs, big and small. Through years of living with dogs and instruction by veterinarians I've learned to properly greet, walk, and interact with dogs. I can handle larger, more active dogs with ease. Despite my larger stature, even the wariest of dogs typically warm up to me quickly because I know to crouch down and let them come to me when I meet them. I love being outdoors and don't tire easily, so I'm perfect for those longer walks. I'm looking forward to meeting your dog!
