Horace G. Smithy donated the Rose Hill estate to the Town of Berryville in 1964 in honor of his late wife, Rosalie. It was, he said, to be used for the educational, recreational and cultural benefit of the community. It is now the site of the Rose Hill Park and the Barns of Rose Hill cultural arts and community center. A small but pretty park, it’s perfect for a stroll with the pooch. The park is clean and well-maintained; there is a play area with swingsets for children, and a stream with fish and a wooden bridge across it. If you’re planning on bringing lunch with you, there’s also picnic tables, grills, and a gazebo.

Sky Meadows State Park
Sky Meadows State Park is a 1,860-acre park near Paris, VA, with scenic views, woodlands, and the rolling pastures of a historic farm. The name Sky Meadows comes from a former owner of the land, who named the property Skye Farm after an island in Scotland. The park offers plenty of opportunities for getting some exercise with the pooch, with its 10.5 miles of bridle trails, 22 miles of hiking trails, and access to the Appalachian Trail. There is also a national historic district located in Sky Meadows State Park that features a cottage that dates to about 1780, and a farmstead and mansion that date back to the mid-1800s.

Even better, there is a 0.75-acre off-leash dog park located in Olde Izaak Walton Park. The dog park includes a 25,000 square foot fenced area with gravel paths and grass ground cover. The park has waste stations for your pooch, and picnic tables and benches for you. There are no water facilities, however, so don’t forget to bring some. The dog park is open from dawn to dusk and can accommodate up to 10 dogs at one time.
