The best dog friendly neighborhoods in Bloomfield

Southwest Bloomfield

Angel Peak rises just a bit above the plains and sits in the middle of the San Juan Basin Badlands, a rolling expanse of colorful eroded cliffs and valleys. The Angel Peak Trail gives hikers and pups easy access to a half-mile dog-friendly trail loop with a mild elevation increase of only 45 feet. Persistent pups and their people are rewarded with a beautiful view of striated rock mesas at the top. Pack in plenty of drinking water for people and pups, as well as doggy bags. Keep Fido leashed for the adventure, as the desert wildlife could be dangerous to super sniffers.

North Aztec

Take your pup out for some natural wonder at Arch Rock, one of more than 400 natural rock arch formations in San Juan County located north of Bloomfield in the town of Aztec. Hikers in the area will also see Anasazi and Navajo rock art as well as evidence left by early Spanish explorers and settlers. Bring lots of drinking water for your hiking pals as well as doggy bags, as there aren’t any waste stations or any other facilities in the area. Oil and gas field roads access most of the hiking areas, but they are not well-marked. Cell phone service in the region can be unpredictable, so pack emergency supplies, a compass, and a GPS or printed map for this adventure!

Navajo Dam

A pawpular day hike or overnight camping option can be found in Simon Canyon, which contains remnants of ancient human occupation. It’s the pawfect destination for explorers who want to fish, hike and camp in the 3,900 acres of diverse canyon landscapes. The entrance to Simon Canyon is just north of the San Juan River, about three miles west of Navajo Lake. The wilderness area is accessible from a gravel parking lot spotted with picnic tables and a single toilet, but there is no drinking water, so pack plenty along with emergency provisions. After a long day running around and sniffing wildlife and scenery, your pawed pal can crash out with you in a tent under the stars.

Bloomfield City Center

The Citizen’s Ditch was dug in 1912, and still carries the city’s water along 42-miles from Navajo Dam to Bloomfield. Trails run parallel to the ditch on both sides, providing humans and canine companions a lovely shaded walk alongside flowing water rich with wildlife, which is a rare find in the desert. At the Farmers Market, customers can shop for their weekly groceries, find unique gifts made by local artisans, and enjoy local musical talents. The market’s laid-back atmosphere welcomes leashed and friendly pups. Water is available, but there are no dog waste stations, so be sure to pack along necessities. Later, you and your furball can relax together and enjoy a green chile cheeseburger from the quaint local Blake’s Lotaburger restaurant. Outdoor seating is available underneath jaunty red and white striped umbrellas, where Fido is welcome to join you for a quick bite.

Route 550/ Northeights Road

Adventure-seeking hikers and their canine companions can find challenging hikes and leisurely walks amongst breathtaking natural landscapes in the Ah-Shi-Sle-Pah Wilderness Study Area. Hoodoos and sandstone formations line a tributary that stretches along six miles, which is just right for a half-day hike with your favorite puppy pal. It’s important to provide frequent rest breaks and adequate water to combat the effects of altitude and dehydration. Pack along emergency provisions as there are no facilities or water, even at the trailhead. Get ready for your adventure at the Big R Farm & Ranch. This store carries dog food, bedding, toys, treats, and more. If you’d like to spend a night or two camping riverside, River View RV Park has hookups and primitive campsites that welcome four-legged visitors.
