The borough of Califon has an interesting origin story. The original settlers wanted to call the town California, but "California" was too long to fit on the welcome sign, so Califon stuck! This cozy town was once a key stop along New Jersey's Central Railroad. Today, it's a quaint community with many dog-friendly amenities.

The former rail line has become the Columbia Trail. Hikers with a leashed dog can experience part of the route of those who once dreamed of finding gold in California. This trail spans fifteen miles and parallels the Raritan River.

The South Branch River Reservation has over a thousand acres set aside for recreational use, including hiking and boating. Many trails averaging less than two miles make for a good workout for a person with a leashed pup. The trails take a hiker through a forest that is home to many kinds of wildlife.

Califon has one veterinary clinic which serves all the routine health needs of your canine companion. Many other veterinary clinics, including emergency clinics, operate a short distance away. The town also has several restaurants that cater to people who want to dine with their dog. Rambo's Country Store on Main Street has three dog-friendly outdoor tables and only serves lunch. Brasserie 513 makes for more elegant dining. This restaurant has twelve outdoor tables that welcome a guest with a four-legged companion and serves lunch and dinner.

You and your hound will fall head over paws for Califon!

Long Valley is located six miles north of Califon. Long Valley keeps hounds healthy and happy with a fully fenced dog park. Howls of happiness echo through the air as pups are released from the leash and get to run! All dogs get to play together in this grassy enclosure, so human companions should supervise their smaller or less assertive dogs. A variety of agility equipment, like hoop tires, A-frames, and beams, make for an opportunity for some training. Don't forget to bring water and bowls; this park has neither. A few chairs allow people to sit while supervising their pups. Waste stations supply waste bags. This dog park requires membership with the Association that manages it.

The Pluckemin neighborhood of Bedminster is thirteen miles east of Califon. Burnt Hill Dog Park doesn't have much in the way of amenities, but it has plenty to start those tails a-waggin'! Dogs of all sizes shed their leashes and experience some freedom in this fully fenced half-acre playground. People will find some waste baggies for those pickups, but no water is provided in the dog park. Extra fun can be had in the main park. This small park of ten acres has picnic sites and some open spaces for a person and a leashed dog to explore.  The dog park is free and open to the public.

A short drive of thirteen miles east of Califon will take you and your pup to River Road Dog Park. A large grassy space of a half acre is fully enclosed for outdoor exercise and play with some furry pals. Members of this play pack must have good manners since there is no separate safe space for the smaller canines. The human folks have some benches to relax on. No water can be found within the dog park itself, but doggie waste baggies are available in good supply. The main park serves as an access point for walking trails. You must leash your pup in order to hike.

Randolph Dog Park offers a pup some liberty from that leash. One enclosure serves the needs of all dogs of all sizes. Dogs have the opportunity to try out various pieces of agility equipment here, including ramps, an A-frame, an obstacle course, and a tunnel. Benches within the park are positioned under large shade trees. Most portions of the dog park are covered in gray rock. Water is provided, but don't forget to bring some waste bags. Morristown is located twenty-three miles east of Califon. Lewis Morris Dog Park can be found in the large and popular Lewis Morris County Park. This free and public dog park is a go-to spot for your Spot! It is fully fenced for off-leash exercise and socialization. A separate enclosure makes it safer for the smaller dogs to play. The ground is mostly paved with a few patches of grass here and there. The hard surface is a drawback for some of the human companions. On the bright side, a rainy day doesn't turn it into a mud bath like in some other grassy parks. Trees line the perimeter and give some shade.
