Catawba, South Carolina is Native American Country. The Indians fought the English for it until the early 1900s. The soil was once perfect for farmland, but then the red clay that lies under it become its downfall. It leads to the soil being washed away with each planting. Eventually, the English turned to the Native Americans and they began to trade so that they could thrive side by side. The Native American culture is still very strong in the area. You can see it in the architecture all through the city.
While you are here, you should visit Landsford Canal State Park.
