City Island is a unique island neighborhood, located just off the New York borough of the Bronx and joined to the mainland by a bridge. It is a small island, with walkable facilities when New York weather cooperates for travel on foot. Summer weather is usually hot and humid and this resort-like neighborhood is enjoyed by many pedestrians, both local and visitors to the island, during the high season.

The island is famous for its seafood restaurants, pubs, and diners, attracting many “mainlanders” to the island for a bite to eat. Restaurants with outdoor seating may allow dogs if you ask the proprietor. Make sure your dog is well mannered if you are hoping to include him at commercial establishments. There are a variety of shops and services that can be accessed in City Island by pedestrians and several landmarks, including the City Island Nautical Museum, are also located within walking distance for residents and their pets.

City Island is a mostly flat island that is part of a group of islands known as the Pelham Islands, which were created by glacial deposits. It has a main road, City Island Avenue, running the length of the island. This thoroughfare connects the island to the mainland via bridge and side streets run off this main artery at perpendicular angles, providing access to residential areas, the waterfront, and businesses.

The body of water between City Island and adjacent Hart Island is known as the City Island Harbor. There are many marinas, yacht clubs, docks and launch sites along the waterfront and many recreational watercraft anchor off this island. Residential neighborhoods feature older established homes with different architectural features and mature landscaping with large shady trees. The accessibility of the waterfront and the islands size makes walking your dog on this island a pleasant experience with lots to see and cool breezes off the water to enjoy with your four legged friend.

The Bridge Park-Catherine Scott Promenade is located next to the Veterans Memorial Triangle on the north end of the island.  This water front walkway and small green space are located right near the City Island Road bridge and provide views of the water, bridge, and mainland.

The City Island Wetlands are located south along the shore on the west side of the island. This natural area is protected, but can be enjoyed by locals with pets from nearby roads and pedestrian walkways. There is quite a bit of wildlife on City Island, including many diverse species of birds such as aquatic species and unique wetland species. Also located on the island is Hawkins Street Park, a small, green park with benches and shade, and Little Park on Fordham Street, which features a waterfront seating area.

All areas are easily accessible on foot and the waterfront is available in multiple locations, enjoyable by locals and their dogs.
