Zenith Park

Cloudcroft residents love to spend quality time with their family and pups at Zenith Park on James Canyon Highway. There are shaded walking paths where you can walk laps, and picnic tables where you can rest and enjoy a snack. The kids will enjoy running around on the playground, and pups can socialize with their friends while sniffing trees and grass. There are trash cans throughout the park, so bring your own doggie bags and clean up. If you need a pooch-friendly place to stay, Dusty Boots Motel is family owned and friendly. You and Fido can relax and enjoy clean spacious rooms, and the park is a just a one-minute walk away.

Trestle

The Trestle Recreation Area is located at the west end of Cloudcroft and offers popular trails and convenient picnic sites. Parking is readily available, and there are clean restrooms nearby. Take your pup and explore the former railroad lines, or pack a lunch and find a shaded picnic table. There are paths for all ability levels, so even if you have small children, they can enjoy the trail too. With several benches along the way, you and Fido can also rest and get a drink of water on a warm day. If you are feeling energetic, follow the longer loop all the way to Alamogordo.

Mexican Canyon

Another interesting place to take Fido for a walk is the Mexican Canyon Railroad Trestle. This trail follows along the railroad lines and offers amazing scenery in addition to a rustic old rail bridge. You can walk to the top of the lookout and see White Sands while getting some exercise with your pooch. There is historical information about the railway located at the beginning of the trail, and the paths are well maintained and not difficult for the average hiker. The entire area is beautiful and your pooch will enjoy sniffing the trees and plants. Just remember to bring your own doggie waste bags and water bottles.

Deerhead Canyon

Whether you are visiting Cloudcroft, or you and your pooch are just looking for a fun weekend activity, check out Deerhead Campground on Cox Canyon Highway. There are a variety of sites available offering fire rings, tables, and pedestal grills. If you have an RV, you can camp in the large pull thru sides and enjoy the open spaces or secluded area. You will need to keep your pooch on a leash when walking through the campground, and you can hike up to the Lincoln National Forest from there. The forest area features breathtaking views and a variety of trails where you and Fido can admire wildlife and plants.

High Rolls

The Grand View Trail on Canyon Rd in La Luz is 15 minutes west of Cloudcroft, and is part of the Rails-to-Trails Conservancy. You can get on the path and walk with your pup about 1.5 miles each way and admire views of the Sacramento Mountains. There are signs along the way explaining historical references and geologic formations, and you will even find a picnic shelter if you need a break.  On the way home, stop off at Ember’s Barkery. The local owner has turned her love of baking, and pups, into a business and features yummy homemade treats for Fido.
