Corapeake, North Carolina is a community that is always moving forward. It started off being the summer settlement for the Native Americans. Then, as time went by, it became a settlement for Civil War soldiers and their families. Up until 1954, the railroad went through Corapeake, but the junction was eventually rerouted. Corepeake has seen more than its fair share of disasters, from hurricanes to tornadoes, but the community always rebuilds. This is a proud and resilient town.

The best part of Corapeake, North Carolina is its small town feel. There is a sense of community here like no other. Every major holiday is marked by a town celebration at the city's center. Kids and dogs are always welcome. Besides holidays, there are also city fun days and community events designed for everyone to get to know each other. The community pot-luck is one of local favorite things to do. Go online and get a full schedule of town events, or, better yet, stop by the library and check out the agenda.

If you are looking for something more outdoorsy to do, take your dog on over to Merchants Millpound State Park. There are trails and lanes that were established in the early 1900s. The original mill is still standing. You will find the historical markers interesting as you learn more about what brought this area to life.

If you head about 20 miles east of Corapeake, you will get to Dismal Swamp State Park. Its name may sound gloomy, but the park is anything but. There is a boardwalk that is about 2,000 feet and winds through the heart of the swamp -- you will be literally standing in the middle of it! Then, you could take a walk through the twenty miles of trails that stretch down through the park past the boardwalk. You will have to keep your dog on his leash while you roam. There is a visitor center with water fountains, but pups aren't allowed inside.

A 14-mile trip from Corapeake to Suffolk will get you to That Good BBQ. You can smell the meat cooking from miles away! You and your dog should try some of the pulled pork. The locals love it on a bun with a side of coleslaw. There are several different sauces to choose from. If you're really hungry, order a full plate and pig out! (No pun intended.) Don't forget the dessert. The homemade pies are so good that you will find room for them. Southerners love good BBQ, and this is the place to come get some!

Vintage Tavern has American food with a southern twist. Locals say that you should try the Bison Ribeye because it is like nothing that you have ever had before. Their menu is packed full of choices, from seafood to chicken and everything in between. Of course, the salads are always fresh. Vintage Tavern is located in Suffolk, which is about fourteen miles from you in Corapeake. Grab a beer and an appetizer while you wait for your food to be cooked fresh for you. The classic dishes here are exactly what the soul craves. Your pup will need to be leashed and well-behaved to dine here.

Suffolk is home to some good eatin', which means you might need a place to burn those extra calories. Luckily, Suffolk has a place to do just that: Lake Meade Dog Park. This is the place to come if you want to let your dog off his leash to run and play. The entire area is fenced with a double gate system to keep everyone safe. There's agility equipment for your dog to play on or for you to get some training in with them. You will love the shaded sitting areas where you can chat with other pet parents. The water stations are clean and the waste stations are well-stocked.

Everyone loves Mexican food. It's a proven fact that spice lifts your spirits and releases feel-good chemicals, so you should make the fourteen-mile trip over to Cazadores. The salsa and chips will be hard to resist as you wait for your sizzling fajitas to come out of the kitchen. You can bring your dog with you to eat on the patio. The patio is huge and always seems to have a dog or two on it. Grab a margarita or a beer to wash down the spice. After all, you need something to cool the fire in your belly!
