Wag! Walkers know Devil's Hole State Park

Devil's Hole State Park covers 42 acres of land along the Niagara Gorge, just north of Niagara Falls, New York. Located on the American side of the Niagara River, this state park is renowned for its natural beauty and challenging walking and hiking trails. There is a pedestrian walkway from the northern parking lot that leads directly to the trails. Dogs are allowed in the park, provided that they are on a leash at all times.

The park is open year-round, however, access to the trails is often weather dependent. Spring and summer provide excellent opportunities to explore. Heavy rains at any time of year may make some trails impassable and dangerous to travel. Winter is often cold, snowy, and icy, and some trails are not safe to walk or hike at these times. Make sure that you and your dog are wearing appropriate gear for walking and for whatever weather conditions you may encounter.

What is the terrain like in Devil's Hole State Park?

The trails in Devil's Hole State Park are a mixture of flat paths, hilly sections, and some rougher trails that require some climbing ability. Dog walkers should stick to the flat trails or paths where the hills are not too challenging for a dog. Although there is a stone staircase that allows access to the base of the Niagara Gorge and the primary Devil's Hole Trail, the stairs are too steep for a dog to climb and should be avoided by walkers.

The trails that are dog-friendly offer a variety of spectacular views and terrain that you and your dog will be able to traverse. Be aware that the trails are not marked but are well-established and relatively easy to follow, providing opportunities for hikers of a variety of levels to get some proper exercise in the outdoors. No matter what type of walking you're looking for, you'll find something that suits your needs.

How many greenways are there in Devil's Hole State Park?

The views available to walkers in Devil's Hole State Park are fantastic and well worth the trip to get there. The main, flatter trails are easy to navigate and full of natural life. The park is home to numerous trees which provide ample shade on a hot, sunny day. There are picnic tables and seating areas along the pathways in case you or your dog need a break during your walk. These trails are popular and are shared by many other people, including other dog walkers, runners, hikers, and sightseers. Be prepared to encounter other visitors to the park and keep your dog on a leash during your stay in order to be courteous to other pedestrians and dogs. Cleaning up after your pup is also advised. Remember to be cautious when venturing down the trails, as some may be more challenging and require some experience in hiking in orde to navigate.
