Rural, peaceful and surrounded by bucolic pastoral scenery, Disputanta, VA is possibly the only town in the United States to be named as a result of good-natured marital bickering. The story goes that General William Mahone and his wife, Otelia, were traveling through Prince George’s county by train, naming settlements as they went after plotlines, places, and characters from the novels of Walter Scott. After christening Waverly, Ivanhoe, and Windsor, among others, the couple were unable to settle on a title for Disputanta, and decided to name it after their disagreement instead. And the rest, as the saying goes, is history. A former railway town, Disputanta is now known as a family-friendly agricultural community, where some of the same families have been farming the land for generations.

Disputanta doesn't have its own dog park, but that doesn’t mean that you and your doggo are bound to be bored! Temple Park is a lovely little spot for a leashed walk, and the town isn’t far from some furrifically fur-friendly hiking options. You might need to lengthen your leash to get the best for your buddy, but don’t worry -- you’ll find some excellent off-leash exercise options a short drive away!

If you and your pooch are looking for a pretty place to hike, look no further than the southern part of Colonial Heights! The neighborhood is home to its very own section of the Appomattox River Trail, a nine-mile stretch that runs from Roslyn Landing Park to the western edge of the city. Meandering along the river, the trail is well-shaded by mature trees, and there are some picnic benches along the route, so you can take a load off if you feel like your doggo has been walking you for the last couple of miles! Remember to bring water, as well as bags to keep this beautiful greenway clean.

Fort Lee Dog Park is just twelve miles away from Disputanta, so you’d have to be barking mad not to check it out! The dog run isn’t the largest, but there’s still enough room for even the most rambunctious fur-ball to romp about and burn off some excess energy. There’s plenty of benches for tired owners, and bags and water are provided, so all you need to do is bring your pooch and some toys and prepare to play! Careful though -- there’s no separate area for small dogs, so be mindful of your pup’s temperament.

You and your pooch won’t be long looking for somewhere to chow down in Downtown Petersburg! Pups and humans with a sweet tooth should check out Buttermilk Bake Shop. Not only are their donuts among the best in the state, but they also serve freshly made dog treats, too! Dogs aren’t allowed in the shop, though, so you’ll have to leave your pup outside and get your treats to-go. Demolition Coffee is a must for caffeine fiends, and they cater to canines outside. Hankering for something more substantial? Consider stopping in at Ammo Brewing! Their pulled pork sandwiches are the stuff of local legend, and they welcome wagging tails on their patio.

Davis Travel Center Dog Park is a mutts-visit for road tripping pooches and their owners! Davis Travel Center itself is actually a gas station and truck stop in Stony Creek, so the dog run here is a real godsend for doggos who go a little stir-crazy on long car rides. The off-leash area isn’t the largest, of course, but there’s still room for your furry friend to stretch their legs after being cooped up. There’s no small dog area here either, but bags and water are provided, and there’s a long bench for owners to sit on and catch a breath.

Make no bones about it -- if your pooch loves hiking, they’ll go wild for a trip to Appomattox Riverside Park! Located just outside the Petersburg city limits, the park contains a whole 137 acres of gorgeously preserved nature. You’ll find a good selection of trails to sniff and explore here -- most are rated easy to moderate, and all of them have spectacular views of the Appomattox River. Be sure to bring your own water and bags with you, and be careful -- bug spray is a must in the summer, or you and your fur-baby will be scratching all the way home!
