Dumfries, Virgina was once a key part of the elite tobacco industry. During colonial times, the town rivaled New York City in size and population. Tobacco was shipped here from all over the colonies, making Dumfries a popular place for merchants. Unfortunately, as the Revolutionary War began and wheat and sugar replaced tobacco as the main exports, Dumfries lost its status as the second largest shipping port in the colonies.

Modern-day Dumfries is a quaint place to visit or hang your hat. First stop: Merchant Park. Not only are there trails to explore with your dog, but you can pay your respects to fallen soldiers as well. There are often Civil War and Revolutionary War reenactments that you and your dog can watch when you tire of the trails. All throughout the beautiful park are monuments that showcase Dumfries' history and tell the story of the area.

Cecil Garrison Park is a little less tourist attraction and a little more nature. It is packed with beautiful walking trails where you and your dog can walk under century-old trees. There are fountains, restrooms, and even a picnic spot up front, but once you start walking the trails, it is easy to feel like you are miles away from anyone.

Everyone loves ice cream. It is the perfect way to end a day or celebrate a special occasion. Baylor's Soft Ice Cream wants you to bring your dog along while you enjoy a cone or cup of your favorite flavor. The staff will love fussing over Fido, and will even give your pooch a "pup cup"! Just remember that you'll have to keep your dog leashed while you enjoy your sweet treat. You will also want to make sure that your pup can handle crowds and other dogs, because pooches from all over the area love to come and sample the creamy goodness on offer here!

Do you and Fido love all things spooky, scary, and haunted? Then Dumfries' Death Trail is for you! During the fall, it is set up as a guided, haunted tour, and you must purchase tickets. Dogs on leashes are allowed on select tours. However, in the off-season, the trails are open by appointment. This trail is every bit as scary as it sounds, so you will want to check this out with plenty of friends in tow. Be warned -- if your dog is protective, easily scared, or prone to biting when startled, you may not want to bring him along.

Prince William Forest Park is a great alternative to staying in a hotel. Here, you can rent full cabins, pull up an RV, or even enjoy some primitive tent camping. Walk Fido on one of the many trails here. Your dog can even join you on an ecosystem tour that shows you how life has thrived in this park for centuries. There is a leash law in all the areas of this park, and dogs are not allowed inside the restrooms. If you've had enough of the ruff and rugged wilderness, all the modern conveniences of the city are just a 5-minute drive away. What better way to make un-fur-gettable memories with your pooch?

Port Potomac Dog Park is a small dog park. You do have to register your pet before you play here. If you are not a resident, you can get a day permit from the city. The park supplies doggie waste bags, and the trash is dumped regularly so this park stays nice and tidy. You will want to bring water for your pup because it isn't always turned on. Because this is a smaller dog park, it doesn't tend to get as busy, so if you are looking for lots of pups to play with, you may want to choose another park. This pawesome park is in Woodbridge, just about eight miles away.
