Dog Areas in Dwight

1 Groomer

Located just 80 miles southwest of Chicago and 65 miles northeast of Bloomington, Dwight is a place full of local hospitality and several historical landmarks. One such landmark includes a railroad station designed in 1891, which was in use until 2016!

The village doesn't boast any pet-friendly facilities, apart from one park (Renfrew Park) in the town center, where leashed pups are welcome to stroll with their masters. Don't fret when it comes to vet care, though -- Dwight may be small, but it certainly has room for a veterinary clinic. You'll find more options for specialty and emergency care in the surrounding areas.

Godley Park District, just north of Dwight, is a wonderful spot with picnic areas and seasonal events that welcomes you and your leashed dog to find a retreat in the shade. Join the tourists on a guided trip around the area, or pay a visit to friendly deer and donkeys in the special enclosures. No matter how cute they are, don’t feed them! (It's against the rules.) Pooches are always welcome, too! Keep your mutt on their leash while exploring the facility before finally letting him run free in the designated dog park. This spot is open to the public year-round and is just amazing for making new friends and playing with some pup peers!

The Kankakee Community College area is nestled on the southern bank of Kankakee River, away from the downtown area and its shopping and dining facilities. While you're passing through, you'll come across River Road Park, a public facility that's extremely popular among students. Just west of the park, you'll find Ice Valley Center, and a few blocks north of there is a place that your pup will adore: River Run Dog Park! This dog park, like most, has two separate enclosures for small and large breeds. You'll need to obtain a permit before Fido can play here, which will require you to supply proof of current vaccinations.

Looking for some good ol' fashioned off-leash fun? Paw on over to Tag-A-Long Dog Park! This recently opened dog park was built entirely by volunteers so the local pups would have a place to play. The park has plenty of grass for your precious pooch to sniff and roll around in. It's also fenced and provides benches, but you'll need to bring some drinking water and bags with you.

If you and your pooch really consider yourselves outdoorsy types, it'd be a huge faux paw not to make the short trip to Shorewood's village center. This area offers some restaurants and cafes, but the real gem here is Hammel Woods Preserve. This is a furrific lush area with walking trails and challenging hikes for advanced walkers. Pooches are welcome in the area on-leash, or they can play together in the dog park! You'll need to get a permit first, though. You can choose from a daily, monthly, or annual pass, so this park is pawfect whether you're a resident or just passing through. The park is fenced and fully equipped with benches and water.
