However, don’t think the drive to Des Moines won’t be worth it. This park is a gigantic 12 acres in size! It is also completely off-leash, so your dog is free to run and play in the park until they tire themselves out. However, the park does require a permit, so be sure to check that out before you take your furry friend.

It is home to one dog park, Ames Dog Park. Like many other dog parks in the state, Ames Dog Park is quite large at 10 acres. It is split into zones: a two-acre zone for dogs under 25 pounds and a zone of the remaining 8 acres for larger dogs. Like many other dog parks, the Ames Dog Park requires a permit based on animal health records.
Although there are no dog parks in the small city of Polk City, don’t despair. The city is only 20 miles from Farrar and home to the High Trestle Trail. This recreational trail is one of nearly 1,600 railroad trails preserved by the Rails-to-Trails Conservancy. It is not a dog park, but it is a great place to take your pup for a long, beautiful walk through the gorgeous scenery that Iowa has to offer. However, remember that all dogs must be leashed at all times. Furthermore, since it is not a dog park, there will be no amenities catering to dogs. Make sure you take doggie poop bags, water and water bowl for your pooch.
