Although this pet-friendly place is a United States Army installation, the happy dogs living around the base prove that doggos are at ease in Fort Campbell, Kentucky! The base actually extends into Tennessee, so dogs get a "Tail of Two Cities" living in the surrounding area of the Fort Campbell installation. The base was built in 1941 and has only grown since. Not only do Army-brat dogs live at Fort Campbell, but the Screaming Eagles of the 101st Airborne Division also call this place home. American flags and yellow ribbons fly in the air alongside happy dogs' tails right here in Fort Campbell!
Civilian pet owners and soldiers alike love living in such a dog-friendly base. There are 3 veterinarians within a short drive of Fort Campbell, as well as 14 groomers, 2 pet shops, and a handful of restaurants that open their doors to our four-legged best friends. The army installation even has two off-leash dog parks where you can take your pup for some exercise, play, and socialization with the other local pups. West of the base lies a vast nature preserve which makes the perfect place for a day out with Fido! After a day full of adventuring, you can head south to grab a bite to eat.
Does your dog need to chase, play, and frolic with other pups at the dog park? Dog owners living in the Campbell section of Fort Campbell have close access to the pawfect place —The North Dog Park. You can bring your Fido here to play in one of two fenced areas — one for the big dogs and one for the little pups. The army encourages owning and bringing dogs to this park to enhance their soldiers' physical and emotional health, so you and your pooch are likely to meet some of the very special canine companions who call this base home!
Does your dog love exploring the world around him and seeing new sights with his nose to the ground? If your dog fancies himself an explorer, then he'll love living in the Hammond Heights section of Fort Campbell! If you head west, you can visit the Land Between the Lake National Recreation Area. The area makes up 170,000 acres of wetland, forest, and open lands right on top of the Barkley Lakes, anchored as a peninsula between Kentucky and Tennessee. Fido will love exploring one of the largest undeveloped lands in the country! Just don't forget to bring water and waste bags.
South Dog Park is one of Fort Campbell's three dog parks and mirrors its neighbor to the north. The dog park is fenced in and features two separate areas for Fido to run and romp in. Visitors will need to purchase a day pass to play here. The same note of army-issued encouragement hangs in the air and the signage around the park. After working up an appetite, you and your dog can head further down and visit a Sonic Drive-In to have lunch. You can bring your pup outside on the picnic benches, or chow down in your car. Don't forget to share a tot or two with your puppers!
Does your dog love surf and turf? Maybe it's because after you're done grilling a ribeye, he knows he'll get a bone! The Burchwood neighborhood — a little over a 30-minute drive away from Fort Campbell — in Clarksville, Tenessee is home to Harbor Cafe. Your dog can join you for a meal outside on the patio, which has live music at night. Harbor Cafe serves up an eclectic variety of dishes, including burgers, pasta, Asian cuisine, seafood, and quality steaks. The restaurant has been at the same location for 13 years and has always welcomed every member of the family — the four-legged ones included!
Does your dog love the flavors from the eastern part of the world? If you head southeast of the Park Village section of the base, you and Fido will find Soho Chinese & Japanese Restaurant. This upscale, but pet-friendly, Asian restaurant serves traditional Chinese dishes like General Tso's Chicken, Hunan chicken, and shrimp chow mein. You can also get sushi rolls! On the Japanese side of the menu, you can order specialties like salmon katsu, shrimp tempura, or a "Dinosaur Egg." Your dog is more than welcome to join you for lunch or dinner. Soho offers outdoor dining — perfect for your pooch!
