Frankfort, IL is a fantastic spot for you and your furry friend. Located just thirty minutes from Chicago, this small suburb is thriving -- it’s ranked as the 36th fastest growing suburb in the United States, and it’s easy to see why!

Despite population growth in recent years, Frankfort preserves a historic, village feel. Downtown is beautiful, with many historic buildings either restored or preserved, and its community is proud and civic-minded. There are many community events that take place throughout the year. If you can, visit in September for the Frankfort Fall Fest.

Frankfort is friendly for humans, but it also welcomes wagging tails with open arms! The town has its own dog park, and there are plenty of community parks for leashed walks. Main Park, just off W. Nebraska Street, is a particular favorite with local dog owners.

For dog-friendly hiking, there’s a trail that runs right through Frankfort. An old railway town, the village has paid homage to its heritage by converting the line into the Old Plank Trail, an easily walkable route that welcomes pets on leash. For doggy dining, check out the White Street Cafe. This family owned eatery serves up delicious, locally sourced food and welcomes canine companions on its covered patio, so your pooch can join you come rain or shine!

Frankfort Bark Park is a pup’s paradise, but be warned -- like many dog parks in Illinois, this one is members-only! Once inside, however, your pooch might think the $50 annual fee is worth it. An access card gains you entrance to a huge green space with a separate area for large and small dogs. Toys, water and bags are all provided, so all you need to bring is your enthusiasm! If the idea of a members-only dog park is not for you, you and your furry friend can still enjoy a leashed walk along the one-mile trail in Commissioners Park.

With wide open grassland, mature wooded areas and a gorgeous creek, the preserve really has all you could ask for in terms of scenery. Leashed dogs are welcome, but be sure to check the map as some trails aren’t suitable due to wildlife. Remember to bring your own bags and water! Once you and your pup have worked out an appetite, consider refuelling at Dancing Marlin, where you two can share some sliders at one of the outdoor tables.

Messenger Marsh Park in Homer Glen is a real mutts-visit. Like most other off-leash areas in Wills County, the dog park charges for membership, but if you can join, your pup will thank you! The Messenger Marsh Park features a seven-acre green site with a whole acre for dogs under 35 pounds, and your pooch will love the natural obstacle course running through the wooded area. If you can’t become a member, don’t worry -- a section of the Spring Creek Trail runs through the larger Messenger Marsh Park, so your fur baby can still get their exercise!
