Freeport

The small community of Freeport boasts the Big Blue River, an 83.8-mile-long river that is perfect for exploring with your pooch. Before going, check with local authorities as to whether wastewater is being released as this is sometimes the case during extreme weather. The river is bordered by shrubs and grasses, as well as trees, making for a very beautiful and serene natural environment for an unleased walk with Fido.  Keep your eyes open for the birds and wildlife you can see.

Morristown

Just a few miles away, Morristown Community Park is a wide-open expanse of grass that has a number of benches, and is often active as sports fields for children’s and adult athletic team practice and tournaments. Concerts and shows, as well as other community events are held that are of interest to the community. Bring Fido for a leashed walk and a pawsome adventure in looking for chipmunks and squirrels as you saunter around the park. There are trees at the edge of the grounds where other wildlife may be found. Food is available in the park at the concession stand during events.

Rushville City Center

Rushville, just seventeen miles from Freeport, was the campaign headquarters for Wendell Willkie's 1940 presidential campaign. Your pup may be more interested in visiting Laughlin Park, a community gathering place for local sporting and other events. The park has a large grassy area with a paved path around the edges of the park. Trees line the pathway for some pleasant shade on warm days. Your pup will enjoy a leashed stroll and sniff-tastic adventure near the trees in search of small wildlife. There’s a large undeveloped portion of the park that could be a suitable place for off-leash exercise.

Morrison Park

Shelbyville, just a few miles away from Freeport, is the home of Morrison Park, a lovely 12-acre community park with plenty of shade and a great place for a dog-tastic walk. The paths throughout the park are wheelchair accessible. Sunset Park, another beautiful and peaceful outdoor space, is a perfect half-mile leached walk on the paved walking trail. Bring a picnic and enjoy the tables and grills available. You and your pup will also enjoy a refreshing leashed walk around Kennedy Park.  The walking bridge over the Little Blue River is a great place to watch the river for a while. Bring along your lunch; it’s a great place for picnic.

Greenfield City Center

Just ten miles from Freeport, enjoy a walk on the wooded trail in Brandywine Park along Brandywine Creek with your leashed pup. Brandywine Park offers a one of a kind park and experience for Hancock County. The hill inside the park is a pawsome place for winter ‘pup-sledding’ after a snow. If Fido enjoys the cold weather and an active sledding adventure, then this is your place for a winter adventure. Come early before everyone arrives for a quick whoosh down the hill!  The park is a great place for a walk, even without the snow.
