Hanover, Pennsylvania is a small town that prides itself on friendly locals, safe communities, and a rich historical past. The parks system and multiple recreational opportunities in the area make it a great place to live or visit, especially for those looking to get outside with their four-legged friend.

Hanover’s dog park is located in the West Manheim Township Park. The park is still being converted from a property that used to a farm – it will eventually cover over a hundred acres. The dog park section is up and running, and features a separate small dog section (for dogs under 30 pounds), over five acres of play space, benches, and trees for shade. The park is open daily from dawn to dusk. In addition, the park has several miles of hiking trails that meander through the forest; dogs are welcome on-leash in those areas.

Hanover is also home to the Raccoon Creek State Park, which was founded over 75 years ago. Today, it remains one of the area’s most beautiful places for recreation. The park covers over 7,500 acres and features a 101-acre lake. There are 44 miles of hiking trails in the park, and overnight backpacking is allowed, making Raccoon Creek State Park the perfect place for a pooch looking for some adventure!

West Manheim Park in Fuhrmans Mill is a great place to bring dogs who need a lot of off leash running time. The park can be hard to find, as it’s set far back from the road, so you need to walk out of sight of the parking lot to find it. Once you have, you’ll know why dogs flock to this park. There are two very large, entirely fenced in areas where dogs are welcome to run off leash! The first and slightly smaller area is for dogs under 30 pounds. The second area is for larger dogs. Dogs are going to have a fantastic time!

Grab lunch with your pup at El Rodeo, a Mexican restaurant with a great reputation and even better outdoor seating. Dogs can join you at any of the large patio tables, and water is available upon request. El Rancho is another Mexican joint where your pup can join you at one of their four outdoor patio tables. If you are just passing through and need a place to crash with your pup, stay at the nearby Clearview Motor Inn just down the road. For a small fee, one dog under 50 lbs can stay cuddled and safe in one of their many rooms.

Delone Avenue/Moose Recreation Park is a large, open area in McSherrystown. This multi-use park is a great place to take your dog when you want a different look than your typical walk. This space has a few sports fields marked off, along with a small picnic area. The majority of the park is smooth grass, perfect for walking laps and letting your best friend work out some energy. The park is also popular for neighborhood events. Sadly, despite the name, there are no moose in the park! Dogs will love it because it's open areas bring plenty of new sights and sniffs every time you visit!
