The best dog friendly neighborhoods in Haralson

Peachtree City Center

Downtown Peachtree City is just over 15 miles from Haralson, but easily worth the trip. The city is laced with 90 miles of multi-use paved paths, a benefit of PTC’s golf-cart culture. Since you can travel safely by foot throughout the city, it would be easy to stage a pup-crawl among the 22 dog-friendly restaurants. Plan to land at Crosstown Grille and Alehouse. Earn the indulgence at Peachtree City Dog Park with some off-leash playtime. If you prefer a more natural setting, the Lake McIntosh Reservoir and 14-acre Lake McIntosh Park lie just outside of town, as well as the Line Creek Nature Area with 2 miles of pristine walking trails.

Warm Springs

Love history? Love dogs? Meet Fala, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s loyal Scottish Terrier and beloved companion during World War II. Just 27 miles from Haralson, Warm Springs National Historic Site celebrates that special relationship once a year on Fala Day, and it welcomes dogs in outdoor areas throughout the site all year. The National Historic Site preserves FDR's second home, the place where he sought relief from his polio symptoms but ultimately died. Also a memorial to our 32nd president, F.D. Roosevelt State Park preserves over 9,000 acres of wooded wilderness. It’s the largest in the Georgia State Park system, with more than 40 miles of trails to explore with leashed dogs.

Sweetwater Creek State Park

Everybody needs a fitness goal, and your furry friend is no exception. Maybe you can’t get him a membership in your gym, but you can certainly sign him up for the Georgia State Parks’ Tails on Trails Club. If your dog (with you and a leash) hikes seven of the Park System’s most scenic trails, he earns a commemorative Tails on Trails bandana. You earn a shirt. Get started at Sweetwater Creek State Park, 40 miles from Haralson in Lithia Springs. Your pups are welcome throughout the 2,500-acre park, and the lake is a popular fishing spot on weekends. To earn his bandana, though, he’ll want to head for the Red Trail (2 miles) or the more challenging White Trail (5 miles). Both trails wind through woods and meadow and to the ruins of a historic mill.

Downtown Decatur

Problem: You want a day in the city, but your pup prefers a calm environment. Solution: Downtown Decatur, 46 miles from Haralson, just outside Atlanta's city center. This hip, vibrant community near Emory University and the CDC is full of dog-loving intellectuals and funky local culture. Dine out at any of Decatur’s 39 restaurants offering pup-friendly patio seating. We recommend the Communion Beirgarten: the vast outdoor dining (and drinking) area puts your pups in the middle of the party. Nearby Taj-Mahound Bakery for Dogs sells gourmet treats made just for your favorite furry people in the whole wide world. Decatur has three dog parks for off-leash antics, so no need to worry about the calories.

Griffin City Center

The Town of Griffin is 20 miles east of Haralson and a lovely spot for a lunch on a patio. There are 9 dog-friendly restaurants in town; the best people/pooch-watching is at Bank Street Cafe where the sidewalk tables look out at the heart of downtown. Griffin City Park offers a walking trail and potential Frisbee lawns. For some serious frolicking, though, drive a bit north of Griffin and check out Hampton’s North Mt. Carmel Bark Park, a leafy paradise with two well-kept off-leash play areas and even a dog-friendly nature trail.
