Hillwood is an older suburb of Seattle, just to the north of the city line and just to the west of Highway 99. Many of the houses here were built in the 50s and 60s and still have a middle-class family feel to them. Conveniently located close to Puget Sound, this area is popular for families who commute throughout the area. There is convenient access to shopping and most amenities such as food or drink and pet stores, vets, and groomers can be accessed at the borders of the neighborhood to make sure your four-legged companion's every need is met.

This area has mostly mild weather with a few rare extremes. The occasional snow storm may come around, but it usually does not stick around long. With 15 inches of rain a year, you can usually find a time during the day to go walkings, but Pacific storms can sometimes last for days, making walks a wet and soggy proposition.

Hillwood is situated on two ridges, providing a variety of terrains to choose from. Walk one way and it may all be flat while another direction may have a significant number of hills to tackle. It is really up to each dog owner and pup to decide what their fitness levels and goals are. Beginners can tackle the terrain at their own pace, but there are certainly enough hills to keep hardcore walkers and joggers happy.

Along roads with more traffic, you are more likely to find sidewalks which certainly make walking safer, but you might miss out on the grass and the natural terrain that are more common on the side streets. On the back streets, expect to not find many sidewalks. In these areas, wearing reflective clothing will make it much safer to walk and the shoulders are frequently dirt or grass which is much easier on your dog’s feet.

Hillwood has one greenway in the form of a city park. Like most of the parks in this area, there is ample green grass for a good romp for your pup who will enjoy exploring the grass and trees. With a nice long leash, he can get in a bit of a run on the big fields available. The lack of greenways is rarely a problem for residents here as dog lovers live close enough to Puget Sound that an outing to the beach makes a perfect escape to take with your canine companion.

Richmond Beach Saltwater Park is a favorite go-to place for many of the residents who live in the area and the walking trails provide some serious exercise. The only other greenway within driving distance is Shoreview Park which is just to the south. This large wooded park has plenty of wooded trails, a lake, a creek, and a place to stop for a picnic.
