This historic area has a long history, and the landscape is very well developed. The area features lots of high rises, and multi-story buildings, and is adjacent to downtown Los Angeles. Although there is plenty of concrete and pavement in this well developed neighborhood, some traditional mature trees and landscaping are tucked in along roadways and between buildings, providing some shade and greenery to the area. Many older commercial buildings have been converted into desirable loft apartments and residential buildings in the area have unique architectural features. There is also a thriving theater and arts scene in this neighborhood. Redevelopment of commercial space to residential has brought more residents back to this historic neighborhood. Unique Art Deco architecture is exhibited by buildings like the Eastern Columbia Building and the Orpheum Theatre. There are plenty of commercial services in the area intermixed with multi-story residential buildings and modern and historic architecture, which makes for an interesting mix of sights and sounds to experience in this central neighborhood.
